FOG Design+Art

FOG Design+Art FOG 2023 will also feature a series of conversations in the FOG Theater, curated by Susan Swig, that are included with admission to the fair.

A platform for contemporary design and art that shifts, morphs, and reveals itself through multiple forms and dimensions.

Happening January 22-26 January 19-22, 2023

FOG Design+Art brings together an international selection of leading modern and contemporary art and design galleries; a weekend of exciting programs; and 21POP, a special installation created by Stanlee Gatti. FOG’s m

ission is to create a dialogue about the relationship between art and design, and to provide a platform for the Bay Area community, as well as an international host of curators, collectors, and art world enthusiasts, to experience works of contemporary art and design by some of the most celebrated dealers of 20th-century and contemporary work. Building on FOG’s longstanding commitment to SFMOMA, the Preview Gala and Innovators Luncheon support SFMOMA’s exhibitions and education programs, while FOG Forum specifically raises funds for the museum’s Architecture and Design department. The programming brings together leaders in the field of art, design, and technology to discuss some of today’s most relevant and pressing issues. The fair was initially conceived of, and is overseen by, a steering committee of individuals who champion art and design in the Bay Area: Douglas Durkin, Stanlee Gatti, Katie Paige, Sarah Wendell Sherrill, and Susan Swig.

House of Seiko () joins us at FOG FOCUS with a solo presentation of new work by the Oakland-based duo Cross Lypka (). The artists’ dynamic collaboration has resulted in suspended ceramic forms glazed with washes of abstract color that fuse the mediums of painting and sculpture into one.

CrossLypka is the moniker for Tyler Cross and Kyle Lypka, long-time partners and artistic collaborators. Their working process in ceramic follows a practical exchange of tasks. Tyler draws a lexicon of visual forms, Kyle interprets and hand-builds from this repertoire, they edit, Tyler glazes, and Kyle fires. Lastly, subtle surface treatments and sealants are applied. The works that emerge reflect this back-and-forth trade, in partnership with the material’s own desires and constraints.

Next week at FOG Design+Art, Charles Moffett () will present a limited edition print by Los Angeles-based artist Alec Egan. Along with many other artists, Egan tragically lost his home and studio in the wildfires that have devastated the city of Los Angeles. 100% of the profits from the sale of the prints will go directly to the artist. The edition will be available for purchase online and onsite at the fair next week at Pier 2, Booth 601.

Our hearts break for the devastation in Los Angeles, and for all of those who have lost loved ones; whose homes, businesses, or schools have been destroyed; or who are currently displaced and unable yet to return home due to the wildfires. The need in Los Angeles is tremendous, and so we have gathered together a selection of fundraising resources for those who are able to offer support to those suffering. We hope you’ll join the FOG Design+Art steering committee and staff in supporting the beloved LA arts community - view our Stories for links on how to help.
