Last night, District 5 Supervisor presented the Counterculture Museum with a Certificate of Honor from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in recognition of our first year serving this community.

The Haight has always been a place where history lives and breathes, and to receive this recognition means the world to us.

Thank you, Supervisor Mahmood, and thank you to everyone who has supported CCM this past year. Here’s to many more.

A year ago, we were still putting it all together. This is one of those special days when the magic started to feel real, Van Morrison playing in the background, our co-founder, Estelle, setting the stage (with some help from Kira 😊) and a dream coming to life at the corner of Haight and Ashbury.

A year later and that feeling is still alive. Come celebrate with us during our 1-Year Anniversary celebration, May 29 through June 4, featuring movies, panel discussions, live music, and surprise guests.

Thank you for being part of the journey.

Over the weekend, a woman from San Diego walked into the Counterculture Museum with a suitcase full of books.

Her late husband spent years collecting them, many of which came from the Beat Museum. Before he passed, he asked her to bring them back to us so they could keep finding readers. She drove to San Francisco to honor his request.

There’s something very counterculture about that. Books passed hand to hand, story to story, generation to generation. These aren’t just books. They’re a life’s collection, returning to where they began, ready to inspire again.

We’re honored to be part of that journey.

On display now: The San Francisco Oracle.

The Oracle was poet Allen Cohen’s dream made real, a rainbow-colored newspaper published right here in the Haight from September 1966 to February 1968. At its peak, over half a million people were reading each issue.

Come see it in person and explore the artists, visionaries, and stories behind it.

And there’s no better way to mark our 1-year anniversary than hearing directly from Ann Cohen (), widow of Allen Cohen, as she reads from his personal notes and poetry — joined by filmmaker Jesse Block on the making of the Oracle. Friday, May 29 at 3:00 PM.

The Diggers didn’t just imagine a better, more authentic world without money. They built one right here in the Haight-Ashbury, one free bowl of stew at a time.

Join collector and historian Bob Dvonch on a journey through his exquisite collection of original Digger handbills, posters, and artifacts that bring their movement to life.

Catch him at the CCM on Friday, May 29 at 8:00 pm. Event details can be found here: https://counterculturemuseum.org/events/ccm-anniversary-allen-ginsberg100/
