As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

June 5, 1776 marks 2 days before Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced the historic “Lee Resolution” before the Second Continental Congress. His proposal called for American independence from Great Britain, the formation of foreign alliances, and a colonial confederation. Representatives from several colonies lacked authority to approve the measure, so Congress delayed the final vote while delegates consulted their assemblies. Meanwhile, Congress appointed a five member committee including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston to draft a declaration. The committee’s document relied heavily on Lee’s resolution which stated, “Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

Happy Semiquincentennial, America!

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On June 4, 1776, Britain’s monarch, King George III, celebrated his 38th birthday, exactly one month before The Continental Congress adopted The Declaration of Independence on The Fourth of July. American colonists transformed the traditional celebration of King George’s birthday into dramatic protests against British rule. For years the occasion had featured ringing bells, bonfires, public toasts and patriotic speeches throughout the thirteen colonies. But as support for independence grew, patriots staged mock funerals and symbolic ceremonies that portrayed the King’s authority as dead. These public demonstrations deliberately marked the end of the monarchy’s control over America and celebrated the birth of liberty instead. The change from royal celebration to revolutionary protest revealed how deeply colonial attitudes had shifted on the eve of American independence during that turbulent summer of 1776.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.

Happy Semiquincentennial, America!

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On June 3, 1775, New Jersey organized for defense as the Provincial Congress passed its first militia law during the growing Revolutionary crisis. The measure required every township to raise a company of eighty armed men between the ages of sixteen and fifty. As fighting intensified in 1776, leaders meeting in Trenton strengthened the law, imposed heavier fines for desertion, and demanded greater readiness against advancing British forces. Their new state constitution would also place the militia under the governor’s command, while local companies elected their own captains. Although Quakers and essential workers often received exemptions, most able-bodied men were legally required to serve monthly tours of duty ultimately fighting for the cause of American independence.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.

Happy Semiquincentennial, America!

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On June 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress received a formal request from the Massachusetts delegation to adopt the New England Army as an official Continental force. The Massachusetts assembly petitioned Congress to officially adopt and fund the regional New England Army, marking a major step toward creating a unified national military. This request came after Massachusetts had already been considered a hotbed of resistance against British authority. As the Revolutionary War began with the Battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts, and then continued 2 months later with the Battle of Bunker Hill in Boston, Massachusetts had been organizing determined opposition for over a decade, most notably through groups like The Sons of Liberty, formed in 1765.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.

Happy Semiquincentennial, America!

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On June 1, 1776, a British invasion fleet led by General Henry Clinton and Commodore Peter Parker arrived off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. Known then as Charles Town, it was the largest, wealthiest American city south of Philadelphia and a major entry point for enslaved Africans, handling 40% of the transatlantic slave trade to the colonies. The British fleet anchored near Charleston harbor, aiming to capture this vital port. American forces under Colonel William Moultrie fortified Sullivan’s Island with palmetto logs and sand. On June 28, the British attacked but were decisively defeated as the spongy palmetto absorbed cannon fire. South Carolina’s flag still features a Palmetto tree to honor this victory.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On May 29, 1776, Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress John Adams wrote to Boston Lawyer Benjamin Hichborn stating:

Unanimity in this Time of Calamity and Danger is of great Importance. You ask my sentiments of the political System to be adopted. My opinion I am very certain will not be followed. We have able Men in the Colony, but I am much afraid they will not be heard...

I wish I could be at Home, at this important Period. But you will remember that all the other Colonies have Constitutions to frame- and what is of infinitely great Delicacy, Intricacy, and Importance, the Continent has a Constitution to form….I have been here four Months, during which Time I have never once been on Horseback, and have found but little Time to walk. Such uninterrupted Attention to Cares and Perplexities of various Kinds, is enough to destroy a more robust Body than mine….

The Moment I can see every Colony in Possession and actual Exercise of all the Powers of Government, and a Confederation well settled for all the Colonies under a Congress with Powers clearly defined and limited; and Sufficient Preparation and Provisions made for Defense against the Force which is coming against Us; that Moment I shall return to my family; from which I have been too long divorced.

Happy Semiquincentennial, America!

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On May 28, 1776, General George Washington issued urgent orders as the Continental Army prepared for a possible British attack on New York City. That invasion would occur less than 3 months later. Washington directed every regiment to remain under arms at alarm posts, ready for inspection and immediate action at any hour. Troops were warned that alarms could sound without notice, and strict discipline was enforced throughout the camps. Soldiers were forbidden to leave parade grounds without written permission from commanding officers. The orders also addressed court-martial proceedings and officer assignments as Washington strengthened defenses around New York City. Following the British evacuation of Boston, the commander understood that a major campaign against the city was rapidly approaching.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.

Happy Semiquincentennial, America!

As we count down to The Fourth of July 2026, The History Center of San Luis Obispo County wants to celebrate the 250th Birthday of The United States of America with periodic looks at what was happening 250 years ago today:

On May 27, 1776, leaders of the Continental Congress staged a dramatic military parade in Philadelphia for a delegation of twenty-one Iroquois representatives from four of the Six Nations. Hoping to secure neutrality or support against Britain, Congress ordered two to three thousand patriot troops to march before the visitors. George Washington, John Hancock, and Horatio Gates observed the display alongside members of Congress. The delegates, staying above the Assembly Room in the Pennsylvania State House, now called Independence Hall, witnessed America’s growing military confidence firsthand. Despite the impressive show of force, the effort achieved mixed results, as four Iroquois nations later sided with Britain during the Revolutionary War.

And that’s the way it was 250 years ago today.
