Black History Month at the Cephas House

Join the Calaboose African American History Museum in celebrating Black History Month through dialogue, practical workshop, reading and conversation. Every Saturday in February the Calaboose Museum will host a free event at The Cephas House to honor black experience, history and voice.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for ๐‰๐š๐ณ๐ณ & ๐๐จ๐ž๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐š๐ญ ๐‚๐ž๐ฉ๐ก๐š๐ฌ ๐‡๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž, a beautiful collaboration presented by The Calaboose African American History Museum and Arts-San Marcos, Texas. The room was full, the energy was incredible, and the creative spirit of this historic home truly came alive.

Poet ๐‰๐š๐œ๐ช๐ฎ๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐Œ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ and jazz pianist/composer ๐‡๐š๐ง๐ค ๐‡๐ž๐ก๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ญ๐ก shared a deeply interactive performance โ€” combining nature-rooted poetry with live jazz improvisation inspired by Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, and the Beat-era poetry-jazz tradition.

The audience response was enthusiastic and heartfelt, and the space itself elevated the experience.
Cephas House has always been more than a building โ€” it is a place where art, memory, and community intersect.

The event also showcased pieces from Hankโ€™s visual art collection, ๐‘†๐‘’๐‘’๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘‘ / ๐ป๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ, celebrating the musical legacy that runs through this community.
