On this Memorial Day, we pause in solemn reflection to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the freedoms we hold dear, and their courage continues to guide us.

Aboard the SS Lane Victory, we are especially mindful of the Merchant Mariners and Naval Armed Guard who sailed into harm’s way—often without recognition, always with resolve. Through war and uncertainty, they carried not only vital supplies, but the enduring spirit of service and sacrifice.

Today, we remember them all—the known and the unknown, those who returned and those who did not. We honor their legacy by preserving their stories, sharing their history, and ensuring that their valor is never forgotten.

May we carry their memory forward with gratitude, humility, and a renewed commitment to the ideals they so selflessly defended.🇺🇸⚓️

National Maritime Day — Honoring the American Merchant Mariner

On this National Maritime Day, we pause to recognize and honor the extraordinary men and women of the United States Merchant Marine—those who answered the call not for glory, but for duty.

Merchant mariners have long stood at the crossroads of courage and necessity, sailing into uncertain waters to ensure that a nation could endure, fight, and prevail. In times of war, they became lifelines across oceans—delivering troops, fuel, ammunition, and hope—often without the protections afforded to traditional armed forces. They sailed unarmed into hostile seas, facing submarines, mines, and relentless storms, guided by a quiet resolve and an unshakable sense of purpose.

Their story is one of sacrifice. Thousands never returned home, their final resting place the very waters they once crossed in service to others. Yet their legacy is not measured solely in loss, but in the victories they made possible, the freedoms they helped secure, and the enduring strength of a nation sustained by their efforts.

On this day, we honor not only their contributions in times of war, but their continued service in peace—supporting global commerce, humanitarian missions, and the steady rhythm of everyday life that so often depends on their unseen work.
We remember the merchant sailor not just as a mariner, but as a patriot—steadfast, resilient, and selfless.

May we never forget their courage.
May we always honor their sacrifice.
And may their legacy continue to inspire generations to come.

WHY ISAAC LANE MATTERS
A former slave who became a bishop and educational pioneer — Bishop Isaac Lane’s life embodies resilience, leadership, and service.

His founding of Lane College created an institution that has educated generations of students, expanded opportunities for African Americans in the post-Reconstruction era, and continues as a powerful legacy more than 140 years later.

The SS Lane Victory stands not only as a piece of maritime history but also as a monument to Lane’s faith, vision, and transformative impact.

The son of a well-known musician, band leader and composer of the early 20th century, James Reese Europe, Jim Europe, Jr. signed on as a seaman apprentice in the merchant marine in 1942. He sailed aboard Liberty ships in the war’s early years, and then was selected for officer training school.

Europe was the only African-American in his section of 30 students, and one of just a handful of African American mariners afforded such officer training. He graduated from Fort Trumbull in March 1945 with the rank of ensign, U.S. Maritime Service. He later earned his license as a third assistant engineer and a promotion to lieutenant, USMS, in December 1946.

As the post-war merchant fleet diminished in size, Europe decided to leave the sea. He joined the New York City Police Department, and later the Fire Department, from which he retired as a decorated lieutenant. He earned a graduate degree in 1975 and worked as an alcohol/drug counselor. In 1988, Europe received the Leadership Award of the Nassau County Commission on Human Relations
