PAINTINGS BY LIDA LOWREY
Curated by Ron Linden
July 25–September 26, 2021
Cornelius Projects is pleased to announce its emergence from pandemic hibernation with an exhibition of paintings by the late Lida Lowrey.
Cornelius Projects would not exist without the support of Lida and her husband Austin. They generously welcomed me into their space and supported my desire to transform it into an arena for experimentation and community building. This exhibition of carefully chosen pieces represents just a fraction of Lida’s prolific output, and is Cornelius Projects' tribute to her.
Lida Lowrey (1934 – 2020)
Artist Lida Lowrey was prolific, working in various paint and print media exploring both abstract and representational imagery with conceptual and technical vigor. She was a dedicated follower of the visual arts, architecture, and design through the 20th and 21st centuries. Her work was knowingly referential and witty in subject matter and form. Lowrey, however, never actively sought gallery representation, and so, but for a handful of interspersed juried shows in California (Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Orange County Museum of Art, Angels Gate Cultural Center, Las Vegas Lied Museum) and Mexico (Biblioteca Pública de San Miguel de Allende), Lowrey was a well kept secret, admired and respected by the artists and intellectuals in the outlier arts community of San Pedro. She painted the last nine years in a studio/house she commissioned on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Lowrey earned her Bachelor in Applied Art, Auburn University, Alabama, 1956, and Master of Arts in Visual Design, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, 1982. She was Director of Piedmont Craftsmen, a non-profit organization in Winston-Salem, NC in the mid-70s, a seminal period for American craft production. She moved from there to the North Carolina Arts Council as Visual and Literary Arts Director and then to the North Carolina Museum of Art as Director of Exhibitions and Design, Raleigh, NC. Lowrey had positions as Director of Exhibitions at Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, and The Minneapolis Institute of Art in the late 1980’s-early 1990s. She retired from professional practice in Los Angeles and painted full-time until her death last September 2020.
Following the opening Cornelius Projects is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 P.M. or by appointment (310) 266-9216.
In alignment with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's policies for indoor public places, face masks are required for all visitors ages 2 and up, regardless of vaccination status. Please do not come to the gallery if you have a fever, cough, or respiratory illness.
Thank you!
