Places of the Heart

through summer 2026

This new exhibition visits the special locations the artists find in their memories, their heart and their love of the land,
all is reflected in their art.

“When I was a young boy my mother’s father , Jack Livingston, worked as a carpenter at Devereaux school in the 50’s. On numerous occasions I was able to go there and play in the surrounding grounds. I remember summer afternoons playing hide and seek in a large wooden boat lodged deep into the sand dunes covered over by trees that had been converted into a “pirate’s ship” for kids. The area is now under the protection of UCSB. I believe this was before the wetlands were filled in to create the golf course that is now restored as the North Campus Open Space. This painting is a late summer view with the tide out and looking back towards where I remember the school stood. My companion piece to this painting is of the NCOS trailhead. It will be included in the soon to open exhibition at the Cheatle Center Library Gallery Both paintings are offered exclusively by SBFA Gallery. ”

In the 70s this was a favorite place to anchor along with Smuggler’s to the east after swordfishing for the day. There could be a whole fleet of older wooden fishing boats there. I was on Santa Lucia, built in 1917. This spot feels very calm after crossing windy lane in the channel. It was part of the Gherini Ranch, now National Park”

John Comer is an American landscape and coastal marine painter born in 1948 in Washington, D.C.. He’s known for his depictions of both natural and urban landscapes in California, including beaches, forests, freeways, and skyscrapers.
Comer’s work is influenced by his connection to the land and sea, particularly the coastlines of California and Baja California Sur. He spent years sailing and fishing, which he believes helped him understand the importance of atmosphere in painting. Comer also credits landscape painter Ray Strong with teaching him about color, value, and drawing. His style is considered part of the tradition of Plein-air painters who depicted early California.

(The Chumash name for Willows on Santa Cruz Island is p’qawwaqaw which means willows.

“Willows is one of the places we anchor on the south side of Santa Cruz. Was a Chumash village there and later a fishing camp.”

This anchorage is just east of Big Scorpion which originally was the offloading pier for the Gherini Ranch. Now part of the National Park, it is used by campers brought over with Island Packers. Pelicans and other sea birds are prevalent here.
