Casa del Herrero

Casa del Herrero Montecito's only National Historic Landmark, designed by George Washington Smith. Tours of the 1925 house and gardens available Wed & Sat, RESERVATIONS REQ

Few of Montecito’s legendary estates remain essentially unchanged. The Casa del Herrero, designed by architect George Washington Smith and completed in 1925, is noted as one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in America, is included on the National Register of Historic Places, and in January 2009, was designated a National Historic Landmark by then Secretary of the Int

erior Dirk Kempthorne. George Fox Steedman, an industrialist, engineer, and amateur architect, had a vision for the house and grounds that went beyond fashion, and he assembled an extraordinary team of architects, landscape architects, antiquarians, and horticulturists to produce the Casa del Herrero estate (House of the Blacksmith)—recognized today as a masterpiece of the Country Place era. His participation in every detail of the property’s buildings, furnishings, and gardens is the reason the estate makes a single artistic statement that is greater than the sum of its parts. Today the entire 11-acre site is owned and operated as a historic house museum and garden by the non-profit Casa del Herrero Foundation, with the goal of preserving the house and grounds, as well as the family’s collection of antiques, books, sketchbooks, drawings, and horticultural records. TOURS OF CASA DEL HERRERO HOUSE, GARDENS, AND SMITHY SHOP ARE AVAILABLE BY RESERVATION ONLY ON WEDNESDAYS AND SATURDAYS. TOURS AVAILABLE AT 10AM AND 2PM BOTH DAYS. We invite you to come experience this graceful Montecito estate.

What a fantastic Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt we hosted at the Casa, the Saturday before Easter! Thanks to the great families and friends who came out in support of the Casa by attending this fun Family Day which drew 24 visitors.

There were craft projects, games, and prizes for the young'uns both before and after the Egg Hunt in the enchanting East Garden, while adults enjoyed mimosas (with fresh-squeezed orange juice from the Casa orchards), grilled veggies, spiral-cut ham, mac-n-cheese, and beautiful mini-cupcakes donated by Wayne Kjar, Your Cake Baker in Montecito and other gastronomic splendors.

STAY TUNED.............for news about our upcoming 90th Birthday Bash on June 28th, 2015! Give us a call if you'd like to celebrate with a Sponsorship of the event.

Meanwhile, enjoy these photos of our Easter Event, taken by Priscilla, which can be ordered from the photographer in high resolution!
