Mai Anh was born into the restrictive and suppressing aftermath of the Vietnamese conflict, one of five children. Her parents, despite the social and political restrictions of the time, opened their home to artists, philosophers, and teachers. That this upbringing has influenced her work is an understatement and does little justice to the poignant and evocative images she shares with us on canvas.

Mai Anh has recently begun to explore an illusory aspect in her paintings, shimmering in detail, as in a dream that lingers long after the eyes awake. Her ability to capture the forlorn grace and intrigue of an era and the Vietnamese people is unmistakable. One can plunge in the backgrounds of her work, to totally submerse themselves into the sights and feel of her home country. The singularity in many canvasses conveys her struggle to find herself, not only through artistic expression, but through her evolvement as a brilliant artist. The simple every-day tasks and long-suffering of her homeland exudes a breathing, living setting which invites the observer far beyond merely viewing her paintings. Her brush-strokes convey a certain sadness and are frequently haunting, but are also proud with the continued existence of a heritage, rich and beautiful, full and free. Against incredible odds, Mai Anh’s artistry ensures the survival of a legacy as rich and unique as anywhere on earth.

Whether or not you have previously seen her artistic work, the occasion to share in Mai Anh's intriguing and haunting endeavors is not to be missed. On exhibit will be 15 new paintings that are like horizontal planes 13 feet wide and 6 feet high, a large scale that is a recent artistic expression for Mai Anh.
