Toledo’s animal imagery makes a significant contribution to the visual culture of the past half-century. His animals have a fluid identity that changes according to the work of art. The exhibit’s two paintings with an octopus are examples of this fluidity. In the "Pulpo y barco de esclavos," Toledo envisions the octopus as a sea monster. The octopus in another work, "Pulpo con ratones," is characterized by its ability to camouflage itself and disappear
into its surroundings.
