In just a few short days, Proceed to the Route will be happening downtown, Saturday, May 30th, and it's getting pretty exciting!

At the museum, we have our newest exhibit available to our visitors - Crossroads of America with emphasis on Route 66 history here in Sapulpa. We also have updated all our scavenger hunts - and they are a blast!

We also have a special guest coming in that very afternoon: Kirby Davis.

At 2:30, Kirby Davis, author of newly released "The Great Beckoning" books will discuss the research on the book projects and have a book signing for his new books.

So come see and visit with us as we learn, share, and engage with Route 66 history.

The legends along Route 66 continue to entertain.

Beyond the neon signs and the nostalgia of open-air diners, there is a darker history that refuses to stay buried.

Sapulpa is 740(Route)66

This new exhibit explores Sapulpa's downtown, Route 66, and the Crossroads of America.

Sapulpa's downtown is the heart of Sapulpa. Its expansion of businesses, "small skyscrapers," interurban trolley, and the iconic Mother Road has placed Sapulpa on the map! Sapulpa refers to itself as Crossroads of America because Route 66 (connecting U.S. east to west) and as well as Alt-US 75 (connecting travelers in America north and south) travels through our town.

Explore this new exhibit, learn how Sapulpa grew and transformed, see how the Bunion Derby (Trans-American Footrace of 1928, a promotion for the new highway) connects with not only Oklahoma, but Sapulpa, itself.

Join us Tuesday, May 5th, 10am, not only for this new exhibit, but also for the Sapulpa's Great Route 66 Giveaway, at 11am!

Route 66 travelers who visit Sapulpa, Oklahoma, in 2026 will have a chance to take home an actual piece of the Mother Road.

Sapulpa’s Great Route 66 Giveaway marks one of three Sapulpa Main Street projects honoring the 100th anniversary of U.S. Highway 66, which Congress approved on Nov. 11, 1926. The other two:

▪︎ Sapulpa Main Street and the Sapulpa Historical Society will release two books in 2026 on the historic highway and its impact on their city.

▪︎ Sapulpa Main Street will launch an annual collectable oilcan series in 2026 with Gasoline Alley Classics, one of the hottest tourist stops on America’s Main Street. New limited-edition cans will debut each following year.

In Sapulpa’s Great Route 66 Giveaway, held in cooperation with the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce and the City of Sapulpa government, Sapulpa Main Street will give away three authentic pieces of the Mother Road during each week of 2026. That works out to one prize a day on three randomly chosen days each week, the places and times announced the previous week on this page. If two or more people are present, the winner will be chosen at random.

Route 66 enthusiasts fearing their trips may not align with a scheduled giveaway may register to reserve a time to pick up their own certified piece of historic roadway. With that prized rock – which will range in size from a child’s fist to a softball – these Route 66 voyagers will receive a free tour of the Sapulpa Historical Museum, one of the best of its kind in the nation, along with a Sapulpa Main Street certificate providing savings that day at participating Route 66 venues. Details for scheduling a stop will be announced on this page.

SMS collected these chunks of Route 66 pavement during the City of Sapulpa’s 2025 downtown revitalization project, which tore up and replaced four blocks of Dewey Street, the Mother Road’s original path through this southwestern Tulsa suburb. Each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Recognizing how winter and severe weather may limit or detour tourist stops, any unawarded chunks will be saved for distribution during Sapulpa's Route 66 Blowout and Sapulpa's Route 66 Christmas Chute. During that beloved two-month event, Sapulpa Main Street will give away all remaining pavement pieces.
