Today, we pause to remember V-E Day.

On May 8, 1945, the war in Europe came to an end. In oral histories preserved by the New York State Military Museum, New Yorkers remembered that day in different ways: Cadet Nurse Corps member Mary Confalone nee Cosada identified V-E Day as the day the war ended in Europe, while Merchant Marine veteran Irwin Gellen recalled being in Times Square with friends from the 5th and 8th Air Forces to celebrate.

Their memories remind us that history lives in the voices of those who served, those who supported the war effort, and the communities that welcomed them home.

This Military Appreciation Month, we honor New Yorkers from every branch, every era, and every kind of service.

At the New York State Military Museum, we preserve and share the stories of those who served under every administration — because leadership matters, and so does service.

7th Regiment Armory, Park Avenue, New York. Circa 1890.

The 7th Regiment Armory was constructed between 1877-1879. In 1917, the regiment was redesignated as the 107th Infantry and the armory continued to serve as its home. In 1940, the regiment was again redesignated and re-missioned as the 207th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft) and continued to serve in that role until 1967. From that time forward, the armory served as the home to various 42nd Infantry Division headquarters and brigade units. Today, in addition to serving as a venue for the arts, the armory is the home of the 53rd Army Liaison Team.
