Jazz in Color
Joe Hindley
Oil Pastel

I chose this piece because of its fascinating contrast between chaos and order. There’s an extraordinary variety of colors, textures, shapes, and patterns, right angles alongside curves, structure alongside looseness. Your eye can enter anywhere: a corner, the center, the top or bottom. There’s no prescribed path.

Like jazz, the composition has structure, yet refuses to be contained by it. Nothing feels accidental, even when it appears improvisational.

I never become bored looking at this piece. To me, that’s the mark of a remarkable abstract work: it keeps rewarding me for looking.

Create your own abstract work of art with guidance from Artist Kathy Kosins!

Kathy Kosins Art Workshop
Capizzo Studio • Saugatuck, MI
Oct 3 at 11:00-2:00pm

For 3 hours, immerse yourself in sound as you expressively paint under the guidance of Artist Kathy Kosins!
Students will participate in an “Improvisation On Canvas” Clinic. This is a painting to Jazz Music via a spotify jazz playlist
The focus will be on the freedom of expression in the abstract, using texture and colors to guide them. Students will paint totally from intuition. Acrylic, Pastel’s and Watercolor can be the medium.
Students are given specific guidelines, such as putting to canvas, what they are hearing. IE. Visual Interpretations of Audio recordings by the Jazz Greats.
Students are encouraged to “Hear” in color and “Listen” for shape inspiration.
Modern Abstractions and also realistic works are both acceptable, however, this is a great learning tool for thinking outside the box and at on the spur of the moment. Students will be asked to have no preconceived ideas before they start applying their medium to canvas.

Supplies will be provided.
$70 per person (cost before eventbrite fees/tax)
