Meet the Yōkai, our spirited new residents making themselves at home at the SCAD Museum of Art! 🌈🍄🌿

Described in Japanese folklore as supernatural beings that inhabit inanimate objects, Yōkai are here as part of Masako Miki’s solo exhibition “The Garden of Wandering Spirits.” Combining abstraction, mythology, and Japanese culture, Masako’s unique felted-wool sculptural creations and watercolor mural immerse visitors in a whimsical, imaginative new world.

Experience “The Garden of Wandering Spirits” on view through Dec. 13 only at !

"For blockbuster exhibitions, head to the SCAD Museum of Art, housed within a historic 19th-century railroad depot that was renovated and extended in 2011. The museum presents two seasonal exhibition programs each year, attracting internationally acclaimed artists and high-profile names such as recent subjects Anish Kapoor, Dan Flavin, and Christian Siriano. This season features a mix of solo and group exhibitions by both established and emerging artists." —Dan Howarth for Galerie Magazine

"The exhibition's animating concept, the 'Pool of Black Genius,' draws on works from the SCAD Museum of Art permanent collection by Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Alma Thomas, and Faith Ringgold, among others. Rather than treating these as background context, the show positions them as cultural touchstones, with Emory bringing fashion into the fray as a form of conceptual art." — Jaelani Turner-Williams for Complex

Embark on an exploration of personal memory, human form, and the wonders of nature in “The Sky I Keep” by Othiana Roffiel (B.F.A., painting, 2012) 🏔️✨

Presenting more than a dozen abstract works, Roffiel invites us to embrace our internal thoughts and find unity within the meditative flow of her artistic practice.

“The Sky I Keep” is on view now through Oct. 4 at the SCAD Museum of Art and organized by associate curator Brittany Richmond.

"Roffiel describes her work as a visual language that conveys abstraction and figuration. However, she cares more about evoking familiarity with an unidentifiable form rather than boxing herself into a category. Her coexisting yet non-fixed paintings often shift as she goes. This makes room for various forms of interpretation within the cosmos, landscapes, and body. This concept in itself has helped form her visual language." — Marisa Kalil-Barrino for 1202 Magazine

"Miki creates colorful sprites inspired by Japanese folklore and Shinto animism that appear goofy at first glance. But Miki maintains that her characters, like so many others, laugh as a way to cope with trauma. 'Humor can bring us closer to the mystery of life rather than diminish it,' she says." — J. Cabelle Ahn for Cultured Magazine

For a long time, only a small number of artists who deploy humor in their work were given the spotlight. That's changing.

Something extraordinary is blooming at the SCAD Museum of Art! Masako Miki’s solo exhibition “The Garden of Wandering Spirits” opens Aug. 10! 🌸🌳

Miki transforms the museum’s unique 250-foot-long window-clad gallery into a Japanese-inspired garden landscape, filled with felted wool sculptures and watercolor paintings. As visitors journey through the gallery, they encounter Miki’s colorful cast of characters known as Yōkai, spirits from Japanese folklore that inhabit and animate both manmade and natural objects. Within this immersive setting, Miki’s works invite connection and empathy, encouraging us to imagine new stories together.
