Gammelgården is entering all of its aprons into CollectiveAccess (our collections management system). There is quite a variety of fabrics, patterns, trims, and lengths with the aprons.

Some of the aprons in the collection are currently being shown as part of the museum's textile display, which shows clothing and textile arts from 1850 to 1950. Visit Gammelgården on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10-4 or on Sundays from 1-4.

Gammelgården is entering information and photographs of all of its shawls on CollectiveAccess, which is tied to MNCollections.org. These are a few of the many shawls in the collection, some of which are on display on the second floor of the Welcome House (Vålkommen Hus). The museum is open on Sundays from 1-4 to view the exhibits and displays (including some of these shawls) as well as for a guided tour at 1:30 and shopping in the Butik.

As a history museum dedicated to preserving the narratives of the past, Gammelgården invites you to pause this Memorial Day to reflect on the significance of this national holiday.

Originally established in response to the grief experienced during the Civil War, "Decoration Day" began as a grassroots movement by communities across the United States to honor the approximately 620,000 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

While Memorial Day has evolved from the 1800s to encompass the remembrance of all American service members who have died in every conflict since the Civil War, its main purpose remains to ensure that the bravery of those who gave their lives for our freedom is never forgotten.

This is one of the most recent pieces of art that the museum received from a generous donor. It was purchased in Sweden and created by Heidi Lange, a Swedish artist who settled in Kenya in the early 1970s.

Heidi lives there for most of the year and is fascinated by the cultures and ways of life of African tribes and how they are similar to those of the Sami.

Heidi creates paintings, batiks, and graphics. This piece, which can be seen on the second floor of the Welcome House at Gammelgården, is titled “Reindeer in the Mountains.” The cloth was dyed, cut, and handprinted in Heidi's workshop in East Africa.

We are closing early today, May 22nd, at 3:15 p.m. The museum will reopen again at 10 a.m. on Satuday, May 23rd.
