Thank you to Bill Bellinger and everyone who attended our Historic Marker Training! We were thrilled to see so much interest in helping preserve and maintain the historic markers throughout our county and surrounding communities.

Your enthusiasm for protecting and sharing our local history is truly appreciated. For those who missed it, we are currently working on putting together cleaning and painting kits that will be available for volunteers interested in helping care for these markers. If you would like to sign out a kit when they become available, please contact us at [email protected].

If you clean and repaint a historic marker, please be sure to let us know. Keeping track of completed projects helps us maintain accurate records and better understand the ongoing preservation efforts taking place throughout the area.

Remembering the Tradition of Decoration Day

Before Memorial Day became a national holiday, communities across the country observed “Decoration Day,” a time dedicated to honoring those who had died in military service by decorating their graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. Following the Civil War, families and local communities gathered each spring in remembrance, creating a tradition centered on reflection, respect, and preserving the memory of those who came before us.

The Old Stone Fort Museum is honored to carry on this important community tradition through our annual Decoration Day Ceremony, which will be held today, May 30 at 11:00 AM at the Old Stone Fort Cemetery (145 Fort Road, Schoharie, NY).

We invite you to join us as we reflect on the history of the holiday and remember those who are no longer with us.

History of North America

This book was written by Richard Johnson under the pseudonym “Reverend Mr. Cooper.” This particular copy belonged to David Williams, one of the three militia men who captured British Major John André, leading to the discovery of General Benedict Arnold’s defection to the British during the American Revolution.

The book includes discussion of “the customs and manners of the original inhabitants” of North America. This volume was donated to the museum by Menzo Hallenbeck.

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful group of homeschoolers for a day full of hands-on learning at the fort!

Students stepped back in time as they learned how butter was made, joined the militia to experience a glimpse of colonial military life, and spent time in our one-room schoolhouse discovering what education looked like over a century ago. They also enjoyed an in-depth tour of the fort, exploring its rich history and the stories of the people who lived and served here.

It’s always exciting to see history come alive through interactive experiences, curiosity, and learning. Thank you to this fantastic group for visiting, we hope to see you again soon!

If you are interested in scheduling a school or homeschool group visit, please contact us at [email protected] or call (518) 295-7192 for more information.

Today, on Memorial Day, we take time to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives while serving our country. Their sacrifice and dedication are part of our shared history, and this day serves as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for all.

Memorial Day traces its roots to “Decoration Day,” officially established on May 30, 1868, as a day to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. as a sign of remembrance and respect. At the Old Stone Fort Museum, we are proud to continue this meaningful tradition.

We invite you to join us this Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 AM for our annual Decoration Day Ceremony as we come together in remembrance and reflection.

Together, let us honor those who gave their lives in defense of our country and ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten. All are welcome to attend.

Timothy Murphy’s English Bull’s Eye Watch

Britain was the largest manufacturer of watches during the 18th century. Bull’s Eye watches were often symbols of wealth and high social status.

The owner of this watch, Timothy Murphy, was a famed sharpshooter during the American Revolution. He is best known for being credited with the shooting of British Brigadier General Simon Fraser during the Saratoga Campaign in 1777.
