Today, July 3, 2024 is the 100th Anniversary of my grandfather, Danny Williams Sr. setting the course record with a score of 65 at the Shackamaxon Country Club in Scoth Plains, NJ. What I find most remarkable is that he used hickory-shafted golf clubs in doing so. What an excellent golfer and such a special guy!🥰🤗

DANNY WILLIAMS SR., WHO SHOT A NEW COURSE AT SHACKΑΜΑΧΟN CC ON JULY 3, 1924, TO BE HONORED

Dan Williams hasn't won a national open nor has he upset the golfing world with a startiing record, but he'll be just as big a hero out at the Shackamaxon Country Club tomorrow as if he had just accomplished either one or both such achievements. Dan, who is assistant pro at the Westfield club, broke the course record July 3, 1924 when he scored a round of 65, lowering Bobble Cruickshank's mark by a single stroke, and in honor of his performance 150 of the 200 or so caddies at Shackamaxon, by popular subscription, have purchased a silver loving cup, appropriately engraved, which will be presented to Williams tomorrow by the presentation committee, Judge Stewart, R. W. Nelson and Frank Pilliod, three Shackamaxon members.

Williams is extremely popular at Shackamaxon and is a big favorite with the boys who caddy at the Westfield links. Williams was formerly a caddle in these parts and at Shackamaxon Country Club he held the post of caddie master before becoming assistant to Cruickshank.

The committee of caddies who selected the cup consists of Mike Comiszey, Ralph Caponi. Ed Markey, Bil Higgins, Rick Williams and Jack Snedeker.

I am still in shock about a most wonderful discovery. Two Dan Williams Sweet Spot irons were among a bunch of hickory shafted irons left to Jimmy Vaccaro by his grandfather. Amazingly, Jimmy was able to find this page and contact the Williams family in order to give these two clubs to us. We are thrilled and most appreciative to Jimmy for his thoughtful gesture. We don't know how Jimmy's grandfather acquired the clubs. We believe they were available for purchase in the Pro Shop at Shackamaxon Golf Club during the 1920s.
Regardless, it's nice to know there are still caring people like Jimmy among us in a world that is not always as kind as we would prefer it to be.

This house was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Williams Sr. Hall of Fame NJPGA from 1947 through 1968, the period where Danny served as head professional at the Original KNOLL GOLF CLUB in Boonton, NJ. The unoccupied house was destroyed by arson sometime in the 1970s. The house faced the first fairway of the Knoll East course. The entire Williams family have many wonderful memories of holidays celebrated there over the years.

Dan Williams, the young assistant professional at the Shackamaxon Country Club has been coming along very fast in the big tournaments His most recent performance, finishing third in the State open at Englewood attests to his ability. Experts who have watched Williams come up from a caddy boy two years ago predict a great future for him.

Julius Boros, Johnny Farrell, Claude Harmon, Tommy Armour, Pete LaPlaca, Jimmy Thompson, Danny Jr., Jerry Volpe, Maurie O'Connor, and Joe Dante among them.
