It was an exciting week when we received a large box from the home of Patricia Rudolph, a former President of the Historical Society. Pat was instrumental in the publication of our renowned yellow history book, History of Early Scott County, in 1977. Like her predecessors/followers, she consistently encouraged people to preserve their family historical artifacts, documents, significant photographs, letters, and more.
How did we get a box from Pat? Recently, her granddaughter reached out to us after discovering the large box of items in Pat’s former home, labeled “Property of Scott County Historical Society.” What a journey it has been to sift through this collection of early Scott County history!
Finally, it has happened! Someone unearthed that old box of treasures set aside for when a museum would be established to showcase the collections and stories of those who built our town from the ground up. Perhaps you have a similar box of forgotten items in your attic? Before you toss them away, take a moment to check; they might hold significant historical value!

"Wait, there's a pueblo in Kansas?" Yes, there is! El Cuartelejo (Spanish spelling) is the northernmost pueblo in the United States and is located in Scott County, Kansas in Historic Lake Scott State Park.
Built in the mid-1600s, El Cuartelejo was referred to by its Puebloan builders as the "Far Away Home." It is believed that they were possibly led there by Apache guides who were familiar with the secluded valley rich in water and wildlife. The site served as a sanctuary for those seeking refuge from the oppressive conditions they faced in New Spain (New Mexico). The blend of Puebloan and Plains Indian cultures at El Cuartelejo is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of these communities in the face of adversity.
Today, the ruins of El Cuartelejo stand as a poignant reminder of the complex history and enduring spirit of the people who once inhabited this land. Archaeological efforts have uncovered artifacts that provide a deeper understanding of the daily lives and interactions of its inhabitants, offering valuable insights into the cultural exchanges that occurred there.
As the El Quartelejo Museum continues to preserve and interpret these stories, we invite visitors to explore this unique heritage, fostering a greater appreciation for the diverse narratives that shaped the history of the region. Through education and preservation, we honor the legacy of those who called El Cuartelejo their home and ensure that their stories continue to inspire future generations.
