Abraham Overholt was a prolific farmer, weaver, miller, distiller, and mentor to generations of his family, including his grandson Henry Clay Frick. Abrahamβs leadership at West Overton transformed his familyβs farm into a company town before the Civil War.
He was born on this day in 1784.
There are no records suggesting Abraham did anything to celebrate his birthday. But if he were to celebrate with his favorite things like we do, we can guess how he may have celebrated.
He might enjoy some of his favorite foods like rivel soup or hot mush and milk, a dish only his wife Maria could get just right. Maybe he would enjoy a rousing game of quoits, as he did the day before he died in 1870. He may go to see opera singer Jenny Lind in Pittsburgh, a singer whom he described could sing βas easy as we can talkβ after he saw her perform in 1850. As he was known to do, he may ride his horse to Mount Pleasant for a shave to look sharp for his day.
Finally, as he did every day, he may have had just a little of his very own whiskey.
If you would like to visit Abrahamβs home, the Overholt Homestead will be reopening in May for guided tours on select days. Stay tuned for details and check our website for updates: https://www.westovertonvillage.org/
