When the Smoke Turned Beautiful

During the North Rim fires this past summer, I traveled to the South Rim to watch from a distance. The scene was upsetting, and at the same time undeniably beautiful. Smoke built into massive cloud formations, catching light in ways I hadn’t seen before and hope never to see again. It was a moment that felt heavy, and one that asked to be painted.

My plan is to return to the North Rim when it opens this summer, to see what the new landscape holds. I’ll share that experience when the time comes.
