It's Montag Mondays with photos from Seaside's early 1900s photographer, William Montag.

This is sometime around 1910 with the Seaside Pier in the background. It was located just north of the Turnaround, from 1906 to 1918 when the winter storms finally took their toll. But its demise prompted the community to vote a bond issue to build the Prom, so all's well that ends well.

Thanks Seaside Chamber for this sharing and for supporting the ribbon cutting. The Arboretum is looking good, thanks to the support of Pacific Power, the Pacific Power Foundation and our partners, the City of Seaside Tree Board.

Stop by the Butterfield Garden at the Seaside Museum (570 Necanicum Dr) and enjoy the flowers. One area that is under a very large tree is our shade garden. It is thriving in the shade with color and shadows. The Garden is open for strolling anytime.

Rededicated on Friday, the Seaside Arboretum at the Seaside Museum showcases trees that thrive near power lines, preventing outages. It was first developed in 2009 after the Great Coastal Gale of 2007 to demonstrate types of trees that were good to plant near power lines to prevent power outages. Jean Clark, with the Chamber of Commerce was the visionary for the first project.

A few years ago the City of Seaside Tree Board and the Seaside Museum partnered to reinvigorate the Arboretum and we celebrated those efforts Friday. The Pacific Power Foundation and Pacific Power provided grants of $6000 to put in new trees, add an irrigation system, add signage and re-landscape the arboretum area. Each tree is labeled and all trees are those that won't grow above 20-25 feet.

Stop by the Seaside Museum (570 Necanicum Dr) and check it out and maybe get inspired for your own yard!

Join us at the Seaside Museum on Friday, May 29th at 3 pm to rededicate the Seaside Clatsop County Arboretum! It was originally developed in 2009 in response to the coastal gale of 2007 to share the kinds of trees that could be planted in yards that would stay under 20 ft to not takeout power lines in a windstorm.

A Pacific Power Foundation grant supported refreshing the Arboretum. It was a joint effort of the City of Seaside Tree Board and the Seaside Museum.

The afternoon will include a ribbon cutting, very short speeches, tours of the museum's Butterfield Heritage Garden, the Citizen Tree and refreshments too.

We're going to start a new series, Montag Mondays, on Facebook. Bill Montag had a photo studio in Seaside and his photos documented Seaside history at the start of the 20th century. We are fortunate to have many of his photos in our collection at the museum. We'll share a few of the lesser known photos as well.

This photo is one of the few we have of William Montag. As is typical, the photographer doesn't take pictures of himself.

In honor of Memorial Day, here are some WWI soldiers who were stationed at Ft. Stevens. Montag provided a lot of signs for people to hold, and no, we don't know why the J in Just Arrived is backwards!

We join the American Legion in honoring those who gave their lives in service to their country. Today at 11 am events begin with a memorial service including a wreath being lowered into the Neawanna Creek from the bridge adjacent to the American Legion Post building, followed by a motorcycle parade west, down Broadway making its way to the Turnaround where the flag is ceremonially raised. Events conclude with a free spaghetti lunch back at American Legion Post 99 at 1315 Broadway.

The Butterfield Garden fence is getting a new coat of paint in preparation for summer. As you can see, it really needed a new paint job. We replaced all the pickets last year and weren't able to paint the final coat before the rains set in, but we're about 3/4 done now and it will be ready to show off at our Arboretum and Grounds rededication on Friday, May 29th at 3 pm and of course, it is the backdrop for the very popular Cake Walk at the 4th of July Social.

And of course a big thank you to Sherwin Williams for providing the paint! They have been very supportive of the Museum over the years. Most every surface at the museum has their coatings and they have donated them all.

The Sou'Wester Garden Club is holding its annual plant and bake sale at the Convention Center today from 9 am to 12 noon. It's a short time, but the plants are great and the baked goods even better.

The Sou'Wester Garden Club developed the Museum's Butterfield Garden and continue to support it today.

It was originally developed in 2009 in response to the coastal gale of 2007 to share the kinds of trees that could be planted in yards that would stay under 20 ft to not takeout power lines in a windstorm.

This year a number of new trees were added along with signage to share information about the trees. A Pacific Power Foundation grant supported this project that was a joint effort of the City of Seaside Tree Board and the Seaside Museum.

The afternoon will include a ribbon cutting, very short speeches, tours of the museum's Butterfield Heritage Garden, the Citizen Tree and refreshments too.
