A Moment in Time – 1986
This photo captures a younger version of me, back in 1986. I had started working at Woodside Gallery when I was just 18. What began as a job quickly became something far more meaningful.

Artists legendary artist Paul Horiuchi (his work in the background), William Ivey, and Gordon Woodside himself convinced me to stay in the business—not with grand speeches, but with an invitation that changed my life. At 20, I was made a partner. They hung my name on the shingle: Woodside/Braseth Gallery. I called it “velvet handcuffs.” That milestone was announced in The Seattle Times in 1980.

Gordon had founded the gallery in 1961. And here I am—47 and a half years later—finally beginning to write it all down.

I’ve had the privilege of working with many of the most consequential artists of our region (and far beyond), and the stories—oh, the stories. About artists, dealers, patrons, architects, curators, collectors, critics, designers, and museum directors. About late nights, big risks, quiet triumphs, and the moments when the right artwork met the right eyes. I’ve got the photos to prove it.

Two different museums approached me about doing an oral history, but I felt a memoir was the right path. Many of those who knew me well when I was young are no longer with us—and it feels important to capture their legacies too, while I still can.

I began writing nine months ago while recovering from back surgery. The research has been immersive, and sometimes emotional. But it’s worth it. My hope is to publish the finished memoir in time for my 50th anniversary in the art world.

Legacy in Practice: Artists as Educators in the Pacific Northwest
Our 64th Annual Summer Exhibition

While curating this year’s summer exhibition, I had a eureka moment, a realization that the artworks I had instinctively selected for the main gallery were not only major examples of Northwest art, but also the creations of some of the most influential artist-educators in our region’s history.

Each artist represented in this show made profound contributions not just through their studio work, but also in the classroom, mentoring generations of artists who would go on to shape the cultural landscape of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

This exhibition, “Legacy in Practice”, honors that dual legacy, of making and teaching, that defines so much of the art history of this region.

Included are artworks by ;
Gaylen Hansen, Alden Mason, Michael Dailey, Jacob Lawrence, William Cu***ng, Michael Stasinos, George Tsutakawa, Michael Spafford, Ambrose Patterson & Viola Patterson
