Swipe for a lifetime in art! ➡️

Happy birthday, Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence! The incredible painter and sculptor would have been 113 this year.

We're loving the contrast between these two portraits. In the first, the 21-year-old artist sits for a delicate, B&W sketch by Henry Bannarn. It's a big change from her vibrant self-portrait, painted in her late 70s.

The influential artist's legacy lives on at Seattle Art Museum, both in our collection and through the Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Prize. We're grateful for her lasting impact on the Seattle art scene!

“Boundless: Stories of Asian Art” at the Seattle Asian Art Museum just got a refresh! Courtesy of a 5-year partnership with the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, a selection of Tibetan and Himalayan masterworks—including depictions of great patrons of the arts, mandalas, sacred landscapes, and personal ornamentation—expands the exhibition’s stories of Asian art and further illuminates the region’s geographic, cultural, and historic complexity.

Get a closer look at these rare works from the Rubin now on view at the Seattle Asian Art Museum.

“The Market will always be within me . . . it has been for me a refuge, an oasis, a most human growth, the heart and soul of Seattle." —Mark Tobey

How 2014 of us to be posting a . We adore this photo of artist Mark Tobey sketching at Pike Place Market in 1946! Turns out, he loved Pike Place Market as much as we do. 😍

The market was a second home for the iconic artist, who often used it as a makeshift art studio. He loved the community space and the people behind the stalls, who established the market in 1907 in response to price hikes in the rapidly growing city.

These rising costs didn't just impact farmers. In an article for the Seattle Times, writer Margaret Callahan noted that Tobey may have also turned to the public market due to his struggle finding an affordable private studio in the city.

Want to see Tobey's POV? We have a dozen sketches of his market scenes in "Beyond Mysticism," our latest exhibition highlighting the reality of living in the Pacific Northwest in the 20th century.

Take a trip to the Seattle Art Museum to see his work—then pop on over to Pike Place Market down the road!
