INSCAPE ARTIST PROFILE: Mary Flynn-Gillies

Q: How did you get started as an artist?
A: i can't ever remember not creating art in some form. i'd have to say it was my first large scale macrame wall hanging i did in 7th grade! but more recently, in the 90's that is, i segued from a career in design to becoming passionate about monotype printmaking. Pratt Fine Art Center became an important part of my life for numerous years and was a great source of my early inspiration.

Q: What materials and tools do you use to create your art?
A: i love collecting, so the foundation of my work is found vintage papers. my hands are my primary tool to manipulate and fold the papers. the color comes from acrylics, glazes, graphite and an occasional oil pastel.

Q: What is the concept and/or message of your current work?
A: i don't think i really have a message...my art is more an expression of my current state of being.

Q: What brought you to Inscape?
A: well i lost my studio of 18 years at 619 Western.....which forced me to look for a new space. i never anticipated finding a better studio or an equally vibrant community.... but i did!

Q: If visitors could only remember one thing about you after they left your studio, what would you want it to be?
A: Hmmm.... maybe that i truly love life, people, and this fascinating planet we live on ....and they see it emanating from my art.
