In Major League Baseball - the St. Louis Cardinals have a long and storied history that goes back to the 1890s. They've won 19 National League Pennants and 11 World Series Titles over the years - the most of any National League team and the second-most of any team - second to the legendary New York Yankees.

Their first World Series Title occurred in 1926 when they beat the Yankees 4 games to 3. They were National League Champions in both 1926 and 1928. Why is that so notable locally ?

It's because those St. Louis Cardinals called Avon Park their Spring Training home during the February and March 1927, 1928, and 1929 seasons. That's right - the World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals played their exhibition games here in Avon Park at the brand-new Cardinal Field. And those games drew fans from all over the Heartland region - from Lake Placid to Lake Wales.

Perhaps the most memorable Spring Training game occurred on March 16TH 1928 when the New York Yankees came to town. "The Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig was there. "The Bambino" Babe Ruth was there. In fact - "The Sultan Of Swat" Babe Ruth hit a home run out of the park that landed in the street. That street is now known as Ruth Street.

It was a businessman in Avon Park - Colonel Charles R. Head - who convinced his longtime friend - the owner of the Cardinals - to bring his team here to train. And what was once Cardinal Field - is now Charles R. Head Field - located in-between Anoka, Winthrop, Emmanuel, and Ruth. Nowadays - the Avon Park Red Devils of Avon Park High School continue Avon Park's baseball tradition of the past 100 years.

As we conclude National Military Appreciation Month this week let us always remember those who gave their life for us, those who served, and those who are serving today - our brave military men and women. Let us never forget them. Let us always support them.

Our good friends about a half mile away at the Florida Medal of Honor Memorial honor our 24 Medal of Honor recipients from here in Florida including our very own Tommy McGuire from here in Sebring (featured yesterday on ).

Their mission is "to honor and preserve the legacy of Florida Medal of Honor recipients through education, leadership, and inspiring displays, ensuring their courage and sacrifice are never forgotten."

Their beautiful Memorial and surrounding gardens and modern Visitor's Center are located off our Circle along South Commerce where it meets South Eucalyptus at the traffic light - next door to the Highlands County Government Center. They are open every Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Check out their web site at - https://floridamedalofhonor.org/

They host military events throughout the year. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Memberships are encouraged and help support their day-to-day operations.

It's Sebring Florida's World War II fighter pilot hero - United States Army Air Forces Major Thomas Buchanan McGuire, Jr. (1920-1945). He was born on August 01ST 1920 in Ridgewood New Jersey. After his parents separated when he was a kid - he and his mother moved to Sebring. He’s a graduate of Sebring High School - Class Of 1938.

During his fighter pilot days he flew his P-38 Lightning (nicknamed "Pudgy V") over the Pacific Ocean during World War II.

He was killed in action over the Philippines on January 07TH 1945 flying not his normal P-38, but a different P-38 that had stalled and crashed in a dogfight with a Japanese aircraft. He was trying to save a fellow wingman at the time. He is 1 of 24 Medal Of Honor recipients from Florida.

In addition to our own Tommy McGuire exhibit at our Charles F. Weigle House Museum & Grayce's Gift Shop - our friends over at the Florida Medal of Honor Memorial have a wonderful exhibit inside their Visitor's Center - as well as a memorial outside. Sebring Regional Airport also has an exhibit in their terminal building. He's also in the Florida Aviation Hall-Of-Fame exhibit at the Florida Air Museum at Lakeland International Airport.

This Memorial Day Weekend we welcome the unofficial start of Summer with barbeques and road-trips and vacations with family and friends. Enjoy the times spent together. Be safe in all you do.

But we must also honor our fallen heroes - those military personnel who served their country - and who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep our freedom strong. They gave their life. Remember them. Never forget them.

This Memorial Day - Monday May 25TH 2026 - our friends at the Military Sea Services Museum on Kenilworth and Roseland will host a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony starting at 1400 (2 PM). The program will include the Posting of Colors and our National Anthem, Invocation, Colonel Mike Borders as the Keynote Speaker, Sebring Mayor John Shoop with remarks, "The Navy Hymn", Taps, and Benediction.

After the program the museum will host an open house with refreshments. Admission is free. Donations are always appreciated.

Have a great holiday weekend but never forget the reason behind it.

Every Thursday we take a virtual tour inside and around our historic Charles F. Weigle House Museum & Grayce's Gift Shop.

This week - it's our gift shop - recently named after Sebring Socialite and Realtor Grayce McCoy. Grayce's Gift Shop faces our Grayce McCoy Room, so the legend of Grayce now occupies both wings of the south side of our house.

Grayce's Gift Shop is open when our museum is open. Come check it out on your next visit this summer.

Our good friends over at the Military Sea Services Museum are doing great things and hosting fun, educational, and informative events.

Mission: To preserve and maintain the customs and traditions of the three military sea services.

It is the only museum in the U.S. that honors the Military Sea Services of the United States of America - The U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Their building is dedicated to the memory of those gallant men and women who honorably served their country protecting our seas, shores, and air space from those attempting to deprive us of our freedom.

The Military Sea Services Museum is located at the corner of Kenilworth Boulevard and Roseland Avenue - about a mile from Sebring Parkway. They are open 4 days a week - Wednesdays to Saturdays - from 12 to 4 PM. Admission is free, and donations are always appreciated.

They are keeping history alive here in Sebring and Highlands County Florida !

Their Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony begins at 1400 (2 PM) this Monday May 25TH 2026. Following the ceremony - a cake will be cut celebrating the 28TH anniversary of the establishment of the museum. Finger foods and drinks will be served.
