Junipine Resort was just one of over 200 works by Sedona architect Don Woods.

Don Woods was a prominent, award-winning architect in Sedona, Arizona, highly regarded for his significant role in shaping the region’s custom residential and commercial landscape.

Over a career spanning several decades, he designed more than 200 custom homes and multiple distinct commercial landmarks in the area.

On May 27 at 5:00-6:00pm, his son, local architect and historic preservationist Bobby Woods, will speak about historic preservation and his father.

Enjoy music and refreshments as we wrap up National Historic Preservation Month at this free community event.

Fiber Art and Music at the Museum on Saturday

On May 23, one dozen award winning fiber artisans will be demonstrating their unique style and technique at the Sedona Heritage Museum.

The event, which will go from 10 am to 3 pm, is free to attend, and visitors may purchase their favorite pieces! Refreshments will be available. Entertainment will be provided by Sedona’s own Sisters 3, a trio of talented youth violinists.

Fiber art is so unique; no two pieces are the same. Here’s what it entails: loom, basket and tapestry weaving, spinning yarn, multi-media materials, dyeing, sewing, knitting, needle and hand felting, crocheting, and remaking and upcycling.

Sedona’s Historic Landmarks

The Chapel was commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church.

After an attempt to do so in Budapest, Hungary (with the help of Lloyd Wright, son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) was aborted due to the outbreak of World War II, she decided to build the church in her native region.

Richard Hein was chosen as project architect, and the design was executed by architect August K. Strotz, both from the firm of Anshen & Allen.

The chapel is built on Coconino National Forest land; the late Senator Barry Goldwater assisted Staude in obtaining a special-use permit.

The construction supervisor was Fred Courkos, who built the chapel in 18 months at a cost of US$300,000.

The chapel was completed in 1956.

On May 27 the museum will hold a special event celebrating historic preservation featuring local architect and Historic Preservation Commissioner Bobby Woods, who will speak about architecture, preservation, and the work of his father, noted local architect Don Woods.

The event includes refreshments and live music, and will start at 5 pm.

This event is free to attend.
