On Christmas morning, do you recall the discovery of fruit and nuts in your Christmas stocking? The popularity of fruit in stockings may have begun in the Great Depression when many families could not afford to purchase traditional holiday presents, and they turned to fruits and nuts. An orange was considered a true luxury as well as an exotic treat as oranges came from southern states, which limited their availability. Also, legend tells us that St. Nicholas gave a poor man three gold balls because the father could not afford his daughters’ dowries. St Nick tossed 3 gold balls down the chimney and they landed in the daughters’ stockings, which were drying by the fire. To honor the story a gift of oranges was given instead of gold. The featured ad from the December 11, 1924 Seminole Sentinel touts the availability of fresh fruit from Richards, “the store that satisfies”. One hundred years later, fruit as stocking stuffers would likely be met with disappointment; however, this simple gift represents kindness, hope, and joy of the Christmas season. Merry Christmas Gaines County and hopefully you will find an orange in your stocking!
