Our intern Sofia plastered one of Queen Margaret’s scapula today so we can flip it more safely in order to get it out of the hard sandstone to prep the other side.

“Morton” the Dipocaulus skull
Width of cast in length: 5 inch/12.7 cm

Diplocaulus was one of the most common amphibians of the Permian, sharing swampy waterways with the freshwater shark Orthacanthus. It lived an aquatic lifestyle, except during periods of drought which regularly affected Permian ecosystems. During long dry spells, Diplocaulus retreated into burrows to aestivate, a dormant state similar to hibernation. If droughts persisted, individuals often died in their burrows, buried until their discovery by paleontologists 287 million years later.

We had the pleasure of hosting Jefferson Elementary from Wichita Falls today! These kids had an absolute blast and asked amazing questions. This has been one of our busiest school years yet, and it’s been so much fun getting to show the first round of school groups through our new museum expansion!
