On this day in 1945, the "Freeman Field Uprising" occurred when black officers attempted to enter to the officers club at Freeman Airfield in Seymour, Indiana which was only open to white officers.

Over 100 black officers were arrested due to this act of protest, and this event served as a catalyst for President Harry Truman to end segregation in U.S. armed forces. The officers were part of the 477th Fighter Group which was comprised of the legendary World War II African-American aviators known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The men involved in the Freeman Field incident would not have their records cleared and restored until 50 years later in 1995.

Today, the Freeman Army Airfield Museum in Seymour tells the history of the WWII airfield.

Today from 10:00-2:00 you can check out our many exhibits, gift shop and our simulators.

This week one of our simulators got an upgrade! The default aircraft was changed to a period-correct aircraft: We have settled on a military version of the DeHaviland Beaver for the main sim aircraft. The DHC-2 came along in 1947, so it’s not specifically WWII. However, it is the right era. Why the Beaver. Well, for one thing, it has a control yoke, which matches the main sim control system. And maybe it has to do with the fact that Larry flew one for 27 hours before he went to Vietnam.

You should check it out. As always admission and parking is FREE!!
