Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art The MGMoA features art spanning 8,000 years of human history and many world cultures

Founded in 1919, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is one of the oldest museums in the state of Oklahoma. Father Gregory Gerrer, for whom the museum is named, was a Benedictine monk of considerable artistic talent. During Father Gerrer's travels to Europe, Africa and South America, he collected objects of artistic and ethnological value. The museum's permanent collections include Egyptian, Greek and

Roman objects; art from the Renaissance through the early 20th century; and large holdings of Native American African/Oceanic and Eastern cultural artifacts. In addition, the museum offers exciting special exhibitions throughout the year.

One of our favorite insects to showcase was the scarab beetle, a very special symbol in Ancient Egypt. Egyptians believed scarabs were magical and represented life, luck, protection, and rebirth. Scarab amulets were often worn for good fortune and placed with mummies to help protect them on their journey to the afterlife.

Today, the Friends of the Museum group had a wonderful opportunity to explore the beautiful stained glass windows at the Emanuel Episcopal Church.

A huge thank you to Jeanni Pruitt — a member of both the MGMoA and the church — for sharing so many fascinating stories and facts with us. Stained glass is such a unique and captivating form of art. There is something truly magical about the way it comes alive when sunlight shines through it.

The Friends of the Museum group meets every 4th Monday at 11am throughout the year, except June, July, and December. Everyone is welcome! Join us on Monday, August 24th, to learn more about this wonderful and interesting group.

Please warmly welcome our Clay Hub instructor — Alyssa Briggs!

Alyssa is a Shawnee local ceramic artist specializing in wheel-thrown and hand-sculpted stoneware. She currently teaches ceramics at Oklahoma Baptist University and operates a small home studio that is open to the public for lessons and memberships by appointment.

Beyond classic everyday functional pottery, Alyssa’s work is known for its whimsical and fantastical themes paired with bright, joyful colors. You can find her work online or meet her in person at various markets and venues across Central Oklahoma.

On a more personal note, Alyssa is married and shares her life with lots of cats, chickens, and quail. When she’s not taking care of business, she’s usually taking care of some sort of animal!

We are so excited to have her lead our pottery pinch class at the museum!

We are always busy at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art… but in June we are EXTRA busy! ☀️🎨🎶

Every Tuesday from 1pm–3pm we will host FREE Art Mania for all ages! During this program, you will get to know famous artists a little better — their lives, their artwork, and what made them unique — followed by hands-on art fun inspired by their creations.

Every Thursday from 6:30pm–8ish, we invite you to our Concerts in the Courtyard series! Bring your own chair, a fan (because let’s be honest… it will be hot 😅), and enjoy amazing musicians from our community, all thanks to the wonderful Thresa Swadley. No registration needed.

Then on Saturdays, June 6 and 13 from 9am–12pm, we want to invite the grown-ups to join us for the first in a series of pottery classes with Alyssa Briggs! No experience required — just come ready to play with clay and have fun.
