Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum is pleased to participate in Blue Star Museums, a program that provides free admission to currently serving U.S. military personnel and their families during the summer. The 2026 program will begin on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 16, 2026, and end on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2026. Learn more and find the list of participating museums at arts.gov/BlueStarMuseums.

Blue Star Museums is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, in collaboration with the Department of Defense and participating museums across America.

“Museums help military families stay connected—to each other, to their communities, and to the nation they serve,” said Mary Anne Carter, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “As our country approaches 250 years of independence, Blue Star Museums provides service members and their loved ones with meaningful opportunities to explore history and spark curiosity. For military families—who often face frequent moves and time apart—these shared museum experiences offer a sense of stability, belonging, and connection. By opening doors nationwide, this program ensures they can engage with the arts and history that reflect their sacrifices and strengthen the bonds that hold them together.”

“Blue Star Museums has opened doors for military families to explore, connect, and feel at home,” said Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, we’re proud to continue this partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and museums nationwide—welcoming military families into the heart of our nation’s story and celebrating them every step of the way.”

In addition to SFTM, participating museums can be found in all 50 states, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and include history, art, and children’s museums; historical sites; botanical gardens; zoos; aquariums; and more. A map of all participating museums is available on arts.gov. Museums can join the Blue Star Museums program all summer long and the map will be updated regularly.

This free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States military—Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps—and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), DD Form 1173-1 ID card or the Next Generation Uniformed Services (Real) ID card for entrance into a participating Blue Star Museum.

Here is some welcome and fabulous news: We have been awarded the 2025 H. Albert Webb Memorial Railroad Preservation Award for our MBTA 3283 Line Car preservation project!
You can read more about this award program at https://massbayrre.org/webbaward.html. The "Webb Award" is administered by Mass Bay Railroad Enthusiasts and we thank them for their efforts.
This grant will be used as a match for our $33,000 Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund grant that we got last year, which needs us to raise another $33,000 to get the CFF grant. So the Webb Award's $10,000 is really worth $20,000 for us!
We will be using this grant money to buy timbers and fasteners and siding to complete our rebuilding of the wooden body of the Line Car.
We still need to raise about $8,000 to meet our match, can YOU help us reach that goal? You can read about our Line Car's history, it journey to SFTM and the work we have already done on it, at www.sftm.org/linecar.shtml, and of course you can make an online or mailed in donation there.

Trolley car No. 10 (Shelburne Falls and Colrain St Ry, Wason 1896) makes the first run of the season on rusty rails. Watch the sparks from the wheels! Once the rust burns off the sparking is eliminated.
We will hold our second Training Day on May 17th, then we open for the season on May 23. See www.sftm.org for more details on schedule and how you can volunteer!

Spring is here! Ryan and Nash are preparing and updating the gardens at the front porch of our Visitors Center. We reopen Saturday May 23.
We are always looking for new volunteers to help make our all-volunteer non-profit museum be the best it can be. Would YOU like to help? Email [email protected] if you would like to be part of our trolley and pump car operating crew (conductors, motor"men" and pump car operators) or to work inside as a Ticket Agent. We also need people to join our Projects and Restoration team to do woodworking, painting, metal working, machinery repair, yard work and track work. Can you help us?
Training Days for trolley crew are Sat May 9 and Sun May 17. See www.sftm.org/training.shtml for more details.
