Lindsay’s first project was a rounding board from the Dentzel carousel - you can see it on the table in the image. We’ll share more images soon.

Help us welcome Lindsay Ocal, our 2019 Samuel H. Kress fellow in objects conservation. We are honored to have been awarded funding in support of Lindsay’s work from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, through a competitive program administered by the Foundation for the Advancement in Conservation (FAIC).

Boy does time fly. Today is Rachel's last day working on the rounding boards. Before we give you the big reveal, here's some pictures of Rachel applying a final varnish to them. Thanks to collections intern Amelia for taking the images!

Today is National Intern Day! This year's summer intern, Rachel, is working on two rounding boards. After documenting the panels, and discussing her proposed treatment with the curator, cleaning is underway. The second image is a during cleaning image taken in ultraviolet light showing that the water-based, pH adjusted gel she's formulated is doing a very nice job of removing the discolored linseed oil coating, leaving the varnish atop the paint intact.

And its a wrap! In addition to removing the discolored coating and applying a protective varnish. Lesley and Annie also repaired tears in the red plush upholstery. Thanks for your great work, Lesley and Annie, and thanks to the donor who provided the funding for their stipends.

I'll share the before & after treatment images of the rounding boards soon. Meanwhile, Lesley & Annie have started work on the swan chariot. The darkened coating on this one is very different from the one removed from its pair!

A few images during cleaning. The difference in the lions is quite dramatic. The difference in the tiger is notable, but more subtile.

Cleaning is well underway! These promise to be fairly dramatic.

Meet Annie & Lesley. They've joined us this summer to work in a pair of rounding boards & a painted chariot. In the last 2 days, they've examined & photographed the rounding boards & completed written treatment proposals. Cleaning the backs is nearly as satisfying as removing discolored varnish from the fronts.
