Bullitt County History Museum

Bullitt County History Museum The Bullitt County History Museum is a free public service of the Bullitt County Genealogical Society Cooperation at its finest!

In year 2000, Bullitt County Government was looking to replace the old 1901 courthouse. Historians worried about the loss of the historic old building. The result was what has turned out to be a great compromise. The county replaced the back section, but kept the significant front portion, allowing that old section to be used as a first-ever county history museum.

Hi there Museum Friends!!!! It is time to make sure you have marked June 27th on your calendar!! I need you to come to the museum and do a scavenger hunt with your children. It will be on the second floor of the museum in the new military section. You can help your child fill out their sheet, and then we will draw for 10 (ten) $10 Walmart cards. I know this isn't much, but kiddos will love to win. I would like to draw for the Wal-Mart cards about 5:30.

ALSO!!! At 5:00 George Washington (Mayor, Jose Cubero) will read a portion of the Declaration of Independence and after he finishes, Abraham Lincoln (Larry Elliott) is going to give the Gettysburg Address with some history tied to it. Abraham's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln (Gwinn Thompson) will also be present. This will take place on the first floor on the courthouse steps inside. We want a crowd there!!

Please come to the museum and play along with us for a couple hours before you walk over to the Shepherdsville City Park for the rest of the America 250 celebrations and the fireworks for Bullitt Blast!!!!

Hey history mystery buffs, here’s another mystery perhaps you can help me with.
I recently learned that there was apparently a community in Bullitt County named “Ogdensville”, but I can find no evidence of it beyond these few clues:
1. A genealogical query at the Bullitt County History Museum has a record of a family ancestor who was born at Ogdensville in Bullitt County.
2. Various hints suggest that it was indeed in Bullitt County, south of the Salt River. (Originally part of Nelson County).
3. It might be connected to Rev. Benjamin Ogden, who lived in Bullitt County for a while.
4. The community would have likely existed around 1800 and must have never been more than maybe a farm and a small store that came and quickly faded away. None of our Bullitt County History maps show that community, and I have nothing on it so far except a biography of Rev. Ogden on our museum web site at
https://bullittcountyhistory.org/bchistory/benjamin-ogden.html #:~:text=In%20the%20first%20four%20years,the%20life%20of%20Benjamin%20Ogden.
(Thanks to Charles Hartley for that link.)
5. Rev Ogden was a big part of Bullitt and Kentucky history. He was a founding father of Bullitt County and a well-know missionary preacher and founder of Davidson Memorial Methodist Church in Shepherdsville. But right now it is only a hunch that he is connected with Ogdensville.

So, history sleuths, find me Ogdensville. We’ve solved several mysteries before.
Let’s do it again! 🙂

In the first four years of Bullitt County's existence (1797-1800) 60 marriages were performed here. Of these Benjamin Ogden performed 29, Simeon Hall performed 27, and the remaining 4 were officiated by James Rogers. Today, we will look at the life of Benjamin Ogden.

Folk art is a form of art that is created by hand and reflects the culture, traditions and values of a community. It has been around as long as the late 18th century.

You must stop in and see our newest display case compiled and organized by Dennis Shaffner. It looks great and represents the America 250. Come in and learn about another local artist, Alma Lesch. Her and her husband, Ted, ran the old Shepherdsville Drug Store but she was a fabulous artist as well.

I meant to post this picture a month ago when we had all the 67 children visit from Cedar Grove and I was thanking all of the volunteers for helping. These are the ones that helped. There’s a few missing from this picture that couldn’t be there to help but are just as appreciated.
Front row is Johnny, Patti, Billie, Sheri, David. Back row is Judy, Cheri, Dennis and Billie’s son, Sean.

((Added note with the answer to “AND” on a Bullitt County map: This post originally was asking about what appeared to be a schoolhouse named “AND” on an official 1925 map of Bullitt County. It turns out to be a good lesson in not believing everything you read. 🙂 It turns out that the 1925 map in question had many errors, apparently corrected in another version later that same year.
As some had guessed, “AND” was supposed to be part of “Louisville and Nashville Railroad” labeling (which is itself partly in error) but the map in question does not have “Louisville” or “Nashville”. The later corrected map does. Another example of errors in the map is that “Mt. Carmel” in southern Bullitt County is named on the map as “Mt. Cromwell”.
So don’t blindly believe what you read on a map. Some are more accurate than others. 🙂 I’ve added images of the incorrect and corrected 1925 maps for you to see.))

Original Post:
On a 1925 map of Bullitt County, museum volunteer David Strange noticed a school that he had not noticed before.
As shown on this detail of the map, a school is shown about a mile east of Clermont on what is now Highway 245.
“AND”. Is that a name? Maybe an abbreviation, since all the letters are caps?
