The Sherman Museum

The Sherman Museum The Sherman Museum is a non-profit educational 501(c)(3) organization that was established in 1976. They are the only examples of WPA art in Grayson County.

The Sherman Museum was founded in 1976 by a group of civic-minded citizens who were concerned about the loss of heritage in the area. The City of Sherman leased the historic Carnegie Library building to the founding group and volunteers ran the museum until the late 1980s when the first experienced museum personnel were hired. In the late 1980s, a second facility was acquired, an historic Church o

f Christ building situated next door to the Carnegie, to be used for storage of the 50,000-plus objects in the collection. The most significant feature of the Church of Christ facility are the 48 original stained glass windows. The Carnegie boasts of three oil on wood paintings, by Texas artist James Swann, that were hung in the building in 1934. Both buildings became a recorded Texas Historical Landmark in 1986 and, in 1990, the Carnegie building was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. In 2005, the City of Sherman transferred ownership of the Carnegie Building and the museum collection to the Friends of the Red River Historical Museum. With the introduction of education and outreach programs during the 1990s, the museum has striven to meet future goals and responsibilities to the public. Off-site exhibits, children's workshops, travelling exhibits which are available to schools, clubs and organizations; all allow the museum to reach a greater number of people in the community. Museum staff are currently involved with the computerization of the collection and have completed over 14,000 documents, 9,000 historic photographs and 800 books.

We know the weather was questionable yesterday, but we still had a strong showing for day 1 of Dino Days 2026. There is still plenty of time to see the exhibit this summer. But don’t wait too long, these guys will go home toward the end of August.

Elvis Rexley just wanted to remind everybody to have a safe Memorial Day, and that Dino Days returns this week. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Are you ready for the Texas Rangers' home opener? Elvis Rexley sure is, he's even dusted off his old seat cushion from the Sher-Den Twins because those bleachers are hard on his old bones.

Ready for spring cleaning? Neither is Elvis Rexley. He'd rather just chase the vacuum around the museum - last time he broke a tooth on this old fossil (but it'll grow back).

Did you know Elvis Rexley tried to claw his way to fame as a DJ? His hopes of fortune went extinct since he kept scratching the records ... the wrong way.
But there is still time to catch the museum's 50th anniversary exhibit. That's right, the museum is almost as old as DJ Rexley himself.

Quick note, the museum will be closing early today (1:30 p.m.), to attend a funeral of a member of our Board of Trustees.
