One of the most well known characters on the frontier was William “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Sidney was a gun slinging, gambling, hard drinking town…filled with outlaws and crime…everything a Wild West town was made of and Cody spent a lot of time here. He was well known to the early settlers of Sidney. He followed the railroad and the cattle herds and Buffalo herds that ran thru Western Nebraska. Buffalo Bill is one of the best known people in frontier history…with a world wide reputation with his Wild West Show. Lots of stories have been written about Cody…but Sidney is lucky enough to have history with him!!!

This photo is circa late 1880s to 1890. The McLernon Store…a grocery and general store. Mr and Mrs McLernon are standing in the door. The horse and wagon were used for deliveries. Store occupied the area that is now part of where The Insurance Store is located (now 10th and Illinois). This corner was commonly known as “The Sidney Business Corner”. McLernon became Sidney postmaster and sold the store to Greenlee and Benson.

Buffalo Bill Cody rode the same frontier routes that ran through Sidney—working alongside Army scouts and officers across the Plains.

While there’s no confirmed record of him at Fort Sidney, his story runs parallel.
