The Silver City Museum runs on community, and we're always glad to have more of it. Collections work, helping run the Museum Store, serving up ice cream at our July 4th Ice Cream Social, you name it... There's a role here for just about anyone!

Visit our website to fill out a volunteer application, or come by the museum and grab one at the front desk. Spring is a great time to start something new!

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 𝐇𝐚𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠!

We're opening a new exhibit celebrating the 20 year anniversary of Western Institute for Lifelong Learning, hosting two community conversations, and offering a historic walking tour as part of Continental Divide Trail Coalition's Trail Days. Everything is free and open to the public.

Honestly though, that "free and open to the public" part doesn't happen by accident. If your museum matters to you, consider giving during this year's Give Grandly. Our nonprofit partners, The Friends of the Silver City Museum, will be there! Every bit helps us stay open, active, and yours.

Full details in the flyer below. See you all out there!

Tuesday March 17

Head into one of our exhibits and snap a selfie with a mystery object. Upload your photo via the QR code.

Here's your clue: Father Aull had a remedy for tuberculosis, and it smelled like a swimming pool. Find his chlorine gas breathing treatment machine, and you've found your selfie spot. That's Aull we're asking!

We'll be open tomorrow from 9am to 430pm. And while you're hunting for your clue, don't forget to browse the Museum Store!

Every object has a story.

Take this sombrero. A small one, actually. Too small and too ornate for a working hat. The metallic thread (likely silver, now tarnished with age) tells you this hat was made for occasions, not sun protection.

The hat itself may be small, but the story behind it is remarkable.

This sombrero once belonged to Lewis Green Stevenson, who came to Silver City in 1898 to work for the Hearst family. The Hearsts built a church in Pinos Altos and ran a gold mine in the area, gold that would eventually find its way into the construction and decoration of the famous Hearst Castle in California.

Stevenson went on to become the Secretary of State of Illinois. His father, Adlai E. Stevenson I, served as Vice President of the United States. His son, Adlai Stevenson II, became Governor of Illinois and twice ran for the presidency, losing to Eisenhower in both 1952 and 1956. He later served as Ambassador to the United Nations under President Kennedy.

Three generations of American political history with a New Mexico connection, starting with a hat in Silver City.

This sombrero was transferred to us from the McLean County History Museum in Illinois. After a thorough evaluation of their collection, they identified items connected to Stevenson's time in New Mexico and offered them a proper home right here at the Silver City Museum.
