Labor Day through the years: Though not an official national holiday until 1894, Labor Day was a state holiday in Iowa with community celebrations even earlier. In this September 7, 1891 photograph, the United Association of Journeymen banner was carried during the parade by local union members. This 1891 "Sioux City Journal" clipping describes "How the toilers will spend their own peculiar holiday." Later, in 1930, this photograph taken from the Badgerow Building, looking west on Fourth St., gives a bird's-eye view of the Labor Day parade through downtown.
