The Sioux City Public Museum explores the region's history and culture, showcasing diverse permanent exhibits from prehistoric times to the modern era alongside exciting traveling exhibits, and fun, family oriented events and programming. The Sioux City Museum & Historical Association is a 501(c)(3) membership organization that provides funding for exhibits and programming for the Sioux City Public Museum and its sites. Currently, the Association is more than 200 members strong.

On this day in Sioux City history: Just over a week after arriving in Sioux City, Hyman Rabinowitz was elected as the first rabbi of Shaare Zion congregation on June 2, 1925. Within two years $100,000 was raised for a synagogue on Douglas and 16th Street opening in 1927. On this day in Sioux City history: The Sioux City Country Club's new clubhouse and grounds on Jackson Street held its grand opening on June 2, 1910. Incorporated in May 1905, the Sioux City Country Club's original course and grounds were in North Riverside near the Big Sioux railroad bridge. As the Riverside neighborhood developed, these grounds became less suited to fit the club’s needs. In 1909, the Sioux City Country Club purchased land on the north end of Peirce’s Addition on Sioux City’s Northside. Local architect W. W. Beach designed the original clubhouse, most of which is still intact in the modern building. The picturesque golf course was designed by renowned golf architect Tom Bendelow.

On this day in Sioux City history: On June 1, 1920, construction was completed on the Campbell Baking Company building at 915 Pearl Street. At the time of its opening, it was the largest wholesale bakery building in Iowa, with a capacity of at least 60,000 loaves of bread per day. The Campbell Baking Co. used the brand name “Merit” bread. Later on, it became a branch of the New York-based the Continental Baking Co., and produced Wonder Bread and Hostess cakes. The bakery closed in 1985. The building is no longer there – it was located approximately where the playground for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland is today. On this day in Sioux City history: The groundbreaking for Cub Foods was held on May 31, 1991. The 67,000-square-foot store anchored the Perry Creek Plaza at Hamilton Blvd. and West 19th Street. Cub Foods closed in April 2006. Today, the building houses a Bomgaars store.

On this day in Sioux City history: The Floyd Monument dedication ceremony was held on May 30, 1901. Thousands attended the Memorial Day dedication ceremonies, and many came by a special train that was provided free by the Sioux City and Pacific Railway Company. The monument honors Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member Lewis and Clark Expedition to die during the journey. On this day in Sioux City history: The Sioux City Cable Railway began operation on May 30, 1889. The line was built by John Peirce and Daniel T. Hedges to service their newly platted neighborhood, Peirce’s Addition, on Sioux City’s northside. The cable streetcar ran on Jackson Street from 3rd Street up to Central Park at the north end of the addition (where the Country Club clubhouse is today). The photos include a view of the line from 8th & Jackson and the cable power plant at 29th & Jones (the cinders in Sunken Garden Park came from this plant). On this day in Sioux City history: Among the numerous Perry Creek floods over the years was the flood of May 28, 1908. This view shows the flooded circus at W 9th and Omaha Streets. As the book "Sioux City: A Pictorial History" points out: "Long-time Westside residents will recall numerous Perry Creek floods, including a severe one in almost every decade." A devastating May 1990 flood led to a massive flood control project for the area.
