From “enséñame // teach me,” Xavier Pastrano’s exhibition exploring identity, language, and belonging.

Black, white, other—check one

“What are you?”
she asked.

The question made no sense to me,
and the initial response
my fourth-grade mind had to offer was,
“Human?”

But that wasn’t specific enough.

The dairy farms of Iowa
had commingled with
the impoverished streets of Puerto Rico.
Milk
became leche
honey, miel

and I was somewhere in between.

I was the hesitation of her pen,
the darting of her eyes
between boxes,

a 9-year-old contradiction.
