Skippack Elementary Colonial Fair !
Once again, SHS members participated in this annual 5th grade event. Cortney Marengo and Sam Engle taught the children how to make candles. Benjamin Webb, with help from Russell Appler, joined the Colonial homes station. Here students discussed the types of homes built back then. Ben showed them a model of the Indenhofen house and the various tools used at the time to turn trees into beams. (Unfortunately to keep things respectful, we do not post pictures of the children.)

Lucky near miss !!!
During the violent storm on Wednesday, the Indenhofen home almost suffered a direct hit. Two large maple branches came down and just missed the house. Nothing appears damaged, especially our brand new windows. Everything has already been cut up, and discussion will ensue about which other threatening trees need to be removed.

Busy night for SHS !
Great presentation by Dr. David Young, Executive Director from the Historical Society of Montgomery County. Dr. Young shared with us his research and writings from not only HSMC, but also the Battle of Germantown and the current activities at Cliveden (Benjamin Chew house). Before the presentation kicked off, local metal-detecting enthusiast Joseph Venezia donated two silver spoons and an Indian head cent that he excavated at Lenape Park. The spoons are initialed and dated October 13, 1870. They appear to be stamped by Norwegian silversmith A.L. Schoyen. Another interesting find was a metal sign brought by an attendee. These were placed in the 1960s to commemorate the route traveled by Washington's army within Montgomery County.

On Saturday May 2nd, SHS will once again host a living-history demonstration "Plowing with Draft Horses". Just like in 2022 & 2024, Steven Burkholder will return with his team and plow the garden in front of the Allebach-Cholet Farm. Also tour our circa 1830s bank-barn and see the collection of tools and implements from yesteryear.

I. Smith tall-case clock Skippackville
A rare piece of local history was listed on ebay for a few days. Legend has it three clocks were made by I. Smith (most likely John Smith, for in this time I was sometimes used for J, much like INRI on a crucifix). John Smith made/repurposed the clocks while Benjamin Cassel made the cases. The story goes each man kept one clock and a third was made to pay for materials and for profit (according to the Cassel family). About ten years ago, one of these Smith clocks was spotted on the tip of Long Island and thus brought back home by the author. As of this week, it was exciting to see a second of the three clocks surface. This one has a case and a painted dial much like the J.Moyer clocks also made in "Skippackville" at that time, and shares little resemblance to the one found in Long Island. I was hoping to pair this one with my own, but was not meant to be. It is presently uncertain who (Smith, Cassel, & ?) originally owned each individual clock.
-Benjamin H. Webb
*note the black columns on the case, a characteristic I have not seen on any other Skippackville tall-case clock.
