This set of $1, $2, $3, and $5 bank notes was issued on May 1, 1862 by the Somerset & Worcester Savings Bank in Salisbury, Maryland. Before the U.S. adopted a unified national currency, local banks printed their own money to keep everyday commerce moving.
These beautifully engraved notes come from the era of “obsolete bank notes,” when thousands of banks across the country issued their own designs — trusted locally, and often unfamiliar just a few towns away.
