This set of $1, $2, $3, and $5 bank notes was issued on May 1, 1862 by the Somerset & Worcester Savings Bank in Salisbury, Maryland. Before the U.S. adopted a unified national currency, local banks printed their own money to keep everyday commerce moving.
These beautifully engraved notes come from the era of “obsolete bank notes,” when thousands of banks across the country issued their own designs — trusted locally, and often unfamiliar just a few towns away.
A fascinating glimpse into how people on the Eastern Shore handled money more than 160 years ago.

Recently donated from Julia A. Purnell’s Snow Hill home, this colorful “Fiesta” punchboard once brought small‑stakes excitement to The Great Pocomoke Fair, a longtime Worcester County tradition. Manufactured by Anco Products of Baltimore, it invited players to punch a hole for a chance at a cash prize — cherries, lemons, and bright carnival colors capturing all the energy of fair week. Remarkably, it still holds its original metal punch and sealed prize slip, a rare survival from a lively chapter of Worcester County fair history.

Sneak peek time!
Our painting project is almost finished, and these photos don't capture how fresh and bright the room now feels. It truly looks like a brand‑new space. What a difference a little paint makes.
This transformation is made possible by the generosity of everyone who has attended History & Highballs — your support is literally on these walls. Thank you for helping us care for the museum in such a meaningful way.
Because everything has been covered and protected for painting this week, there will be no “From the Collection” post this week, but we can’t wait to share more once the room is fully put back together.
Stay tuned — big things are happening at the Julia A. Purnell Museum.

Earlier this week, an individual removed the Maryland State Flag from the Julia A. Purnell Museum and replaced it with an unapproved flag. As soon as the museum became aware, the unauthorized flag was taken down. The Maryland flag was returned yesterday with an apology.
Our American flag had already been removed several weeks ago because it was worn and tattered, and it was given to the local Boy Scouts for proper retirement.
We apologize for any confusion and want to be clear that neither the Town of Snow Hill nor the museum authorized the flag change. Thank you for your continued support.

Over the past two days, our community has shown up in an incredible way—bringing us closer than ever to reopening the Delmarva Discovery Museum. We are deeply grateful for your generosity, encouragement, and belief in what we do.

But we’re not quite there yet. If you’re able, please consider making a donation to help us reopen and preserve this special place for our community. Every gift truly makes a difference.

This won’t just be a reopening—it will be a new beginning. We are committed to building a stronger, more sustainable Museum that will serve and inspire our community for generations to come.

Thank you for standing with us. ❤️
