Marker Monday takes us to the Snyder Cemetery. As you enter the cemetery from Avenue E, the marker for T. J. Faught is on the right by the second road. T. J. Faught came to Scurry County in 1879 with other men from Burnet County - W. A. (Billy) Johnson, W. D. Sims and O. P. (Pack) Wolf. All had established ranches in the NE part of the county, with Faught nearest to town. He distinguished himself not only as a rancher but as the sheriff who never carried a gun. The first sheriff elected after the county was organized in 1884 resigned after 6 months. Faught took the appointment in 1885, served out that term and was elected for three terms, serving until 1892.

Faught was a big man who demanded and got respect for law and order during some rowdy times. He never carried a gun just a pool cue stick.

T.J. Faught was married to Ophelia Sims and they had an adopted daughter, Hattie. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge which was organized in Snyder in December 1890. He built a Lodge hall for the Masonic Lodge on the second floor of a two-story brick building on the NE corner of the Snyder Square (1801 25th St) which bears his name Faught in 1910.

Another Scurry County Historical Marker was cleaned and restored this morning. An important note before it's description, these markers are being cleaned and restored by volunteers that have received training and by permission of our Scurry County Historical Commission and done in accordance with the guidelines put out by the Texas Historical Commission. Today's marker is the Marcy Expedition marker that is located on Hwy 350 South of Ira and close to our county line. This marker had a bullet hole in it and a dent that almost became a hole. Doug Scott repaired the hole and dent before repainting the marker. It is a large marker so we took turns sanding it and finishing the process. Thankfully this marker could be repaired and restored. Another piece of Scurry County history preserved. Thank you to our trained volunteers, Doug Scott and Glenn Burns who donated the materials and time.

Commissioner Doug Scott , Glenn Burns and I went to Fluvanna to restore two of their markers this morning. Enjoyed learning the history of our county and getting our markers in top condition to preserve our county history. Doug brought a sander that worked great! We follow the guidelines put out by THC for restoration.
