Fifty years ago today, Queen Margrethe II and Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark visited Solvang during their 1976 tour of the United States. During their visit to Solvang Lutheran Home (now known as Atterdag Village), Kevin McConnell, a young local resident, was determined to capture the moment on camera, despite strict instructions that photos were not allowed.

In a fun twist, someone was also secretly photographing Kevin as he photographed the Queen, meaning there were at least two renegade photographers in Solvang that day.

Fifty years later, these candid moments remain a charming reminder of Solvang’s royal connection and the locals who refused to let history pass undocumented.
