Have you heard of Evacuation Day? in 1776, the Continental Army won the Siege of Boston in 1776, after an intense 11-month siege. The event is still commemorated in Massachusetts. But it was also an important moment in Virginia.
While Boston was celebrating, the atmosphere in Virginia was tense. Colonial leaders like George Washington knew that Virginia’s royal governor Lord Dunmore was trying to convince British military leaders to “transplant the War to the Southern Colonies,” and retake Virginia. But the British troops leaving Boston decided to sail to Nova Scotia, and then New York City, stranding Dunmore in the Chesapeake. The ghosted Dunmore gave up and soon left for Great Britain. The war only returned to Virginia in 1781, with the Yorktown campaign.
