Up next in the gallery: Rooted in Activism

On View: June 12-July 12
Reception: Sunday June 14, 5-7 pm

This exhibition began as a tribute and memorial to Felice Regan, a founding member of the Brickbottom Artist Building, an artist who used the power of printmaking to disseminate ideas from anti-war activism during the Vietnam War to the plight of our planet through endangered species education. Regan’s powerful vision points to moments in history and at the same time highlight the cyclical nature of events and ideas. We find ourselves right now dealing with the same ugliness of war on so many levels - demonization of the most vulnerable - the poor, the immigrant, the disabled. We are seeing the rewriting of history and the dialing back of steps forward our country has made concerning women’s rights, gay rights and racial equality. The issues Regan exposed in the 60’s are still with us and artists today are using powerful imagery to call attention to the gravity of these times.

Brickbottom Gallery has connected Regan’s messages from the 60’s-80’s with invited contemporary artists who are boldly showing uncomfortable visuals and ideas of this moment.

Exhibiting Artists: Linda Bond, William Evertson, Shea Justice, Ellen Shattuck Pierce, Felice Regan, Susan Schmidt.

Exhibition Statement by Jerry Russo:

In 2012, I began a long-term documentary photography project focused on artists in their studios. Over the next fourteen years, I traveled throughout Massachusetts photographing painters, sculptors, photographers, performance artists, and filmmakers. By the project’s completion, I had documented more than 200 artists in the spaces where their work is born.

My aim was to reveal the origin of the artistic ritual: the studio as both sanctuary and laboratory. These portraits allow viewers to see artists within their environments and to witness the materials and physical spaces that shape their creative process. At times, the experience felt almost voyeuristic, as if observing a private, sacred ritual underscoring how essential solitude and privacy are to an artist’s ability to fully immerse themselves in their work.

For the exhibition drawn from this project, I challenged myself to curate through a photographer’s eye, selecting only artists who paint and draw. The show creates a visual timeline of the act of making—something non-artists rarely get to experience. Each artist is represented by one painting or drawing displayed alongside their portrait, accompanied by a written statement ref lecting on their relationship to their studio and the importance of having a dedicated creative space.

Up next in the gallery: Surrounding Impressions by

Our cityscapes and urban themes explored through impression based media in both sculpture and printmaking

Six artists push the scope of defining urban art and encourages the viewer to ask; does art surround us at all times and at every street corner? How much of the artist is an architect and how much of the architect is an artist? Curated by Cara Gonier, executive Director of rolling River printmakers of New England.

On view: December 5 - January 11
Opening reception: Sat, Dec 6th 3-5pm. See you there!
