Thank you to all who were able to come to the Blessing of the Fleet and Fish Fry Dinner. And a huge thanks to Pastor Dennis Smith for leading the ceremony and to the band, the Shore Tubas, and, of course, Captain Lou’s for the excellent fish dinner. What a way to start the summer season!

The Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old tradition of bringing well wishes before the start of the sailing season, which, as of this weekend, has now begun! To set sail on any of the MMM’s fleet, visit https://michiganmaritimemuseum.org/visit/on-water-experiences/ to book your tickets today!

Next week, former MMM curator Kenneth Pott unravels the mystery of a Michigan dugout canoe.

Join us on May 27th at 6:30 here at the Museum or on Zoom with our virtual lecture pass as we explore the remarkable story of the museum’s oldest artifact—a Native American–crafted dugout canoe—and the discoveries researchers have made about its origins, construction, and journey through time.

This special program will also mark the premiere of the canoe’s newly installed exhibit space.
Free for members. In-person and virtual tickets are available online:

Next week! The Michigan Maritime Museum will be kicking off the summer season with a jam-packed day, starting with the annual meeting. Members are invited to join us to learn more about the museum’s plans, what’s ahead, and what we’ve been working on on May 22nd, 2026, from 3:00pm - 4:30pm in the R.B. Annis.

Following the Annual Meeting, be sure to check out the brand new Working the Water: Commercial Fishing on Lake Michigan exhibit in the Harris Commercial Fishing Building. Take a deep dive into the history of one of South Haven’s most important industries.

That evening, we have the Blessing of the Fleet and Fish Fry Dinner. Blessing boats at the start of a season or long journey is a centuries old tradition across the world. The MMM’s ceremony will be held on the docks starting at 5:00pm.

Directly following the blessing will be a fish fry, featuring the famous fried lake perch from our neighbors at Captain Lou’s until 7:00pm. Tickets are $22 for Museum members and $27 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased online, over the phone, or in person.

Join us tomorrow at the Michigan Maritime Museum in the Jerry Mason Learning Center to celebrate the mothers, aunties, grandmothers, and caregivers who enrich our lives.

Guests are invited to decorate a flowerpot, craft vibrant tissue paper blooms, and take home a packet of native Michigan wildflower seeds—creating a lasting tribute to those we cherish.

This program is included with museum admission or membership.

Presented in honor of Mrs. Betty Upjohn Mason.
