Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum We celebrate Sparta, WI astronaut Donald "Deke" Slayton and bicycles. Deke Slayton was one of America's first astronauts and is a native to the Sparta Area.

The museum is seen as a progression of transportation, from the first bicycles to todays space missions. Sparta is home of one of the first rails to trails programs in the United States and is therefore known as the bicycling capitol of America. Stop by to see our exhibits which include bicycles dating back over a hundred years and Deke Slayton's Space suit. We have an excelant area for children where you can take a picture of your favorite astronaut and they can learn about space. We also accept school groups and if interested please call us or visit our web site.

Visitor spotlight: Jeff Brettingen visited today because his dad talked about Deke Slayton a lot. Jeff's dad worked on Apollo guidance systems at Delco Electronics in Oak Creek, WI. Because of his work he met Deke and thought he was a great guy.

Did you know that the Sparta Masonic Temple building (200 W. Main St.) was dedicated 103 years ago today? A large parade was held down Water Street and over 1600 attended the event. Here's a photo of a large crowd gathered on the courthouse lawn across from the Masonic Temple for the Dedication on September 17, 1923. The building now houses the Monroe County Local History Room & Museum and Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum.
