Great news, Spencerport! The Riverie canal boat will be at the Depot dock running tours during Canal Days this summer! Riverie, a modern yacht-style vessel is operated by the nonprofit Rochester By Water. Riverie spends most of its season in Downtown Rochester but will be in Brockport in June and Spencerport in July, helping to provide greater access to the Erie Canal in two villages with that have long histories with the canal. Calling local history fans! The Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum is offering an Arch Merrill book club this season. Arch Merrill was an author and journalist who wrote extensively for the local newspapers, primarily about local history. He published more than 1500 stories in his lifetime, many of which were published in dozens of books he produced. We have a large supply of his books and invite you to stop by and pick one up. Read it, then come to a book club session prepared to share at least one interesting thing you learned from the book.

Who remembers party-line telephones? The exhibits at the Depot Museum this season focus on Ogden Telephone Company and the early days of telephone service in Ogden. We have an extensive and fascinating collection of telephone equipment and memorabilia given to the museum by the family of Don and Maxine Davison, who owned Ogden Telephone Company. Come learn about party-lines, payphones, switchboards, and all sorts of complex electrical equipment that connected our community in the 20th century. Look up your old telephone number in our collection of old phone books and relive a simpler time.

This Saturday May 16 at the Depot: Opening Day and SALE! We've spent the winter cleaning out old stuff and have some interesting things to offer for sale. Stop by Saturday from 10-2 and take a look. Some of the items offered include a Chautauqua Art Desk, a pull-down world map from an old school room, assorted frames, and a variety of books and games.

The Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum is looking for additional volunteers this season, so if you have a couple hours to spare and would like to know more, please email Patty Uttaro at [email protected]. Our volunteers typically work at least one 2-hour shift a week June-August. Volunteers welcome guests to the museum, give brief remarks about the museum exhibits, and distribute packets of information to canal travelers. Last year, we welcomed over 280 boats to our dock as well as bicyclists and walkers traveling the canal. Nearly 3000 guests visited the Depot from near and far.

The Little DC Library in front of the Depot is open for the season! The "DC" stands for former Depot Director and Trustee Doreen Castano who painted and installed the first little library. We are sad to say Doreen passed away this month, but her fingerprints are all over the Depot. In fact, Doreen will be memorialized at the Depot this summer with a new outdoor bench provided by the Village. More to follow on that, but in the meantime, take a stroll on the canal and pick up something good to read from the little library!
