Catherine MacMahon’s “Restrain” (2021) grows out of the logic of Shibori involving a process of folding, binding, resisting, soaking, and release.

Instead of using indigo on cloth, MacMahon brings the process to paper, allowing the dye to register where the surface has been held, saturated, and interrupted leaving behind a deep blue field that opens into areas of pale, almost ghosted light.

On view now in Fly Over, guest curated by Amy Herritt Merritt.

Dick Wray’s “Untitled No. 1500” (2005) has the restless energy of an artist working without hesitation.

Born in Houston in 1933, Wray became a defining presence in the city’s postwar art scene. His work carries the physical charge of Abstract Expressionism, but never feels derivative. Wray’s work is held in major collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Robert Jessup begins without a fixed image, allowing form to develop through an improvisational process of movement, revision, and discovery.

Earlier in his career, this approach often produced figurative paintings with a surreal edge. Around 2011, Jessup’s work shifted decisively toward abstraction, opening a space where line, color, and rhythm could become the primary subjects. In recent paintings, strands of color gather, loosen, overlap, and pull across the surface, creating compositions that feel both intuitive and carefully resolved.

Jessup’s work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Dallas Museum of Art, among others.

Working across sculpture, performance, and two-dimensional media, Catherine MacMahon () has developed a practice rooted in material contact and the physical act of making. In that hanging sculpture “Humanoid”, woven reed and jute rope are shaped into a suspended, body-like form that feels at once delicate, architectural, and animate. The work reflects MacMahon’s sensitivity to touch, pressure, repetition, and hand labor.

Kelly-McKenna Gallery is pleased to present our spring exhibition “Fly Over”, a group show guest curated by Amy Herritt Merritt, on view tomorrow, April 30 through June 14, 2026.

Moving beyond mythology and “flyover” clichés, the exhibition brings together contemporary artists working across the space between America’s coastal art centers. Rooted in the interior West and Midwest, the works on view present these regions as sites of invention, rigor, and lived complexity.

Featuring works by Du Chau, Robert Jessup, Catherine MacMahon, Jenny Day, Ruth Borum-Loveland, Natani Notah, and Dick Wray, “Fly Over” explores conceptual rigor and the contemporary vitality of regional practice within a global art discourse.

Join us for the opening reception later this month on Thursday, May 21 at 6–7:30 PM

Thank you for featuring paintings by in this beautiful Spring Lake, NJ residence.

Kelcie Mack is a contemporary painter whose work centers on abstracted depictions of furniture, exploring the intimate and familiar relationships we form with objects and their makers. We Live in the Trees has been extended through Sunday, April 19.

Join us today from 11–5 PM, and Thursday through Sunday next week, to experience highlights from the exhibition, including works by Ulf Saupe.

Saupe’s practice is rooted in experimentation. Each work emerges through layered, often unpredictable processes that combine photography with painterly intervention. Using techniques such as gum printing, pigment, and unconventional materials, he disrupts the surface of the image, allowing chance, chemistry, and time to shape the final composition. Works by German artist Ulf Saupe are on view now.
