Max Taylor Studios

Max Taylor Studios Max painted in oils at a very young age, Jr. High, and gave it up quickly due to frustration. And of course, he cannot leave out his beloved Texas.

At the ripe old age of 69, he took up the brush again and never looked back. His goal in his paintings is to bring the viewer to an old fond memory or to a place longed for. Max loves to paint what he loves... from the woods and the mountains of Appalachia where he camped with his four sons to the swamplands of Louisiana where he roamed every summer visiting his grandmother. "If the subject means

nothing to me, I cannot paint it. It must first be in my heart for it to show up on my canvas." Technique:
"As a studio artist, I rarely use a reference photo, but closing my eyes, I envision where I want to be. After a rough sketch, I work to develop the painting with colors, contrasting light with shadow to bring the viewer to a sense of belonging in the subject matter. I want my observer to feel comfortable and relaxed, imagining themselves in the painting by bringing up a pleasant memory or a place longed for."

Salt Marsh - Low Tide
The tide has gone out leaving the pungent smell of the remains of decaying shellfish and marine life. While many may find it repulsive, there is a type of calm in the memory that you made as a child as you crabbed and fished for Stripers in the shallow waters.

Texas Elements - Gallery Wrapped

The elements of the Texas Hill Country come to life as the sun begins to glare in the from the left of the viewer. The highlights on the cactus needles and dappled light under the oaks give way to the deep shadows. The Bluebonnets hide and moss rock appears. Mesquite shrubs sway in the wind coming off of the lower landscape in the distance.

Desert After Sunrise
The desert is unbelievably cold just before the sun rises. As the rays break over the horizon, the warmth of its glory begins to illuminate the desert flora all around you. The dark shadows of the distant mountains give way to the ever-increasing light, the tips of the higher plants show their colors, and the values of the cactus pads change with each moment.

Broken Axle

The remains of a covered wagon that did not finish the trip. The rocks, the ruts, the uneven roads, if they can be called roads, finally took their toll. The family started out proud with great ambition and hope. Wheels repaired along the way; Bearings replaced. And now, the broken axle finally caused the abandoning of this prairie schooner. The dark, moody sky matches the despondency these pioneers must have felt as they scattered their belongings into other's wagons who were kind enough to make room.
