A Tour of the Railroad Historical Museum
Did you know there is a railroad museum located in Springfield, Missouri? This hidden gem offers free admission and is packed with fascinating railroad history.
What You’ll See:
The museum features several historic railcars and exhibits, including:
St. Louis–San Francisco R.R. 4-8-4 No. 4524 (with tender)
A Railway Express Agency baggage car
An Amtrak Superliner car (painted in Chicago & Northwestern colors)
A Burlington Northern Railroad caboose
Getting There:
As you approach Grant Avenue, turn onto Douglas Street. Parking is available along the street or in the gravel lot.
At the front gate, donations are appreciated but not required. Please sign in so we can keep track of attendance. Our volunteers will be there to welcome you.
Suggested Tour Route:
Start your visit at the depot, where you can experience what a historic train station was like. You may also want to check out the miniature caboose nearby.
Next, head to the locomotive. You can climb up into the cab (note: not wheelchair accessible) and imagine yourself as the engineer or fireman. Volunteers are often nearby to answer questions.
Continue on to the baggage car, which contains memorabilia from the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway.
Then explore the commuter car, filled with uniforms, hats, model trains, and more.
Finally, visit the caboose, a classic Burlington Northern car used with diesel trains and decorated with railroad artifacts.
Before You Leave:
Feel free to exit or retrace your steps through the exhibits. You’re welcome to take this pamphlet home or to your hotel.
The museum is open on Saturdays from May through October—but you’re always welcome to return for another visit.
If you have questions or would like to schedule a private tour, contact information is available on-site.
